Converting the Cherokee Indiansfrom hunters into cultivators, seems like the object of Jackson's speech,but the underlying reason for the movement is for gold which was found inGeorgia. "Actuated by this view of the subject, I informed the Indiansinhabiting parts of Georgia and Alabama that their attempt to establish anindependent government would not be countenanced by the Executive of theUnited States, and advised them to emigrate beyond the Mississippi orsubmit to the laws of those States." Jackson gives the Cherokee Indians anultimatum, whereby either the Cherokee Indians move west of the mississippior they will have to abide by the laws of Georgia and the United States.The Cherokee Indians seeking their independent sovereignty, moved west ofthe Misssissippi, while almost half of their tribe had been decimated (TheTrail of Tears). Again, The United States is violating the soverignty ofthe Cherokee Indian land and is following precedent of the past policiestoward the irreverance of Indian Lands. According to Document P, "The Cherokee Nation, then is a distinctcommunity. . . in which the laws of Georgia can have no force, and whichthe citizens of Georgia have no right to enter but with the assent of theCherokees themselves or in conformity with treaties and wi...
