Although a few like Andrew Carnegie felt they had a responsibility to the poor,charities did not amount for all of the poor families hardships and were basically given tosilence the voice of those in poverty. Most of the wealthy, were greedy robber baronsinvoking Social Darwinism to collect hundreds of millions of dollars, benefiting fromwhat many considered unfair advantages.Socialism is an economic and political philosophy that advocates collective orgovernment ownership of factories and property. One goal of socialism is to broadlydistribute a societies wealth. Influenced by Karl Marx, a German philosopher whocriticized the capitalist economic system and predicted its eventual overthrow byworkers.However, many rejected the idea that the government should prohibit those to competefreely. Many wealthy also repudiated the idea because they did not want to lose theirfortune, and would not with out fighting for it. While workers, who wanted equality inthe industry, could not put up a fight for fear of U.S. military intervention. In conclusion, Social Darwinism has contributed greatly to economic growth ofthe United States, leading its position as a powerful and wealthy industrial nation.However, neither of these philosophies, socialism and Social Darwinism, solely couldsolve Americas economic problems. Social Darwinism would have horrific lastingeffects on the rest of the world in the present, and in the future, inducing in the 20thcentury a second world war as a result of Hitlers Darwinistic beliefs of a master race. Italso creates a large gap between social classes, and leaves only a few amount wealthyand successful.
