American History
napoleon
napoleon Napoleon Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica. His parents, Letiza and Carlo were very strict. He was one of seven children of his prominent lawyer father and strong willed beautiful mother. His education was a very prominent one, he entered a school in the nearby town of Brienne-le chateau, and was known to excel in mathematics. He immediately showed his interest in the armed forces by enrolling in the prominent Paris military school Eode Military. Immediately after graduating in 1788 he joined the radical political group known as the Jacobians, he was thought to have joined them because of their interest in making France become a democracy. At 16 Napoleon received his military commission and became second lieutenant of artillery of France. His status position remained unchanged for 15 years. Napoleon was very dedicated to his military career and received a much deserved vacation. So he went on leave and moved his family to Corsica an island near France, But still dedicated himself to the Corsican national guard. Although in another country Napoleon was still an active member of the Jacobions, (who had just overthrown and murdered the King of France Louis XVI) which angered the monarchist the King of Corsica, who declared the Bonapartes outlaws. Napoleon immediately fled with his family back to France, and rejoined the French military. Upon his return to France he met his future wife, Josephine Beauharnais. they were promptly married in 1796. France’s newly formed democracy had been at war with Europe since its beginning. Immediately after marrying he took command of a 38,000 men army and completely won the war in one year. His quick victory was mainly owed to his military strategy which was to start his attack with very few of his men, seek the weakest point of the enemies army and focus all attacks on this point. After his quick victory Napoleon was promoted to lieutenant in 1798 and to captain in 1799. Since France was now a democracy an entirely new government needed to be formed, so a convention was held in Paris to form the new Government. When protesters of the new leaders got violent and tried to storm the convention, Napoleon was called in to protect the leaders. He used a technique known as a “whiff of grapeshot” which involved using cannons at point blank range. The new government known as the directory had a 3 part consulate, Napoleon was of course the first consulate. Maximillion Robespierre was set to take control of the French Government. Maximillion was set on expanding France, he thought to do that all his enemies must be defeated. So in May of 1800 he sent Napoleon with 38,000 men to Invade the Egyptian Mamelukes who were quickly defeated. As the French swept through Egypt they came to an army in Abu Quir that was allied with the British. This was not expected so Napoleon faced his first defeat. Napoleon with his remaining army quickly retreated to a friendly nation, and remained there to build strength. He learned that another enemy of France, Turkey was planning to attack Egypt. So in 1801 he gained another victory over Turkish army in the same place he faced his first defeat. When Napoleon returned he learned that Maximillion and the leader of artillery had been killed in a battle against the rebels of the new government. So Napoleon took control of artillery and completed victorious the battle against the rebels. Which now gave him the rank of brigadier general at only 24. After a few rise and fall leaders of the French government, Napoleon decided on November 9, 1802 to take control. His ideas were different from previous leaders. He wanted peace with neighboring countries, so in 1801 the Treaty of Luneville directed by Napoleon was signed putting Europe at peace. (World Book page 15) This put Napoleon in peoples favor, riots stopped and France united. He soon revised the Directory and changed French laws into codes known as Code Napoleon which was based on peoples rights and freedoms. The choice is unanimous, the people love Napoleon. In May of 1804 the people and the Senate vote Napoleon emperor, and in December of 1804, Napoleon is crowned becoming first leader of France as a democracy. (World Book page 16) Bibliography:
