BATS
BATS Do bats get in your hair? Do vampire bats exist? How blind is a bat? These are questions you might ask yourself if you were ever near a cave, an attic or another sheltered place. A bat is the only mammal that can fly. They usually stay in dark places, tend to live in colonies, come out only at night, and hang upside down when they are resting. As night approaches, they head for their feeding grounds. Bats have an excellent sense of smell and hearing and depend on these senses to navigate and find food at night. Bats eat large numbers of insects and are, therefore, valuable to people. The following is a description of several bat species: Vampire Bats These mammals feed on the blood of other animals and live in Central and South America. Vampire bats swallow about 1 tablespoon of blood a day. They leave their victims with a small wound which heals quickly, but these bats can carry rabies. Brown Bats They live in the United States in buildings and caves and have a wingspan of about 12 inches. Free-Tailed Bats These brown bats have a wingspan of up to 12 inches, live in colonies, mostly in caves in Southern United States and Mexico. Red Bats With a wingspan of 12 inches, these bats live alone in trees and fly south every winter. The male has bright red, white-tipped fur, while the female has a grayish red fur. Now, to answer the questions asked earlier: Bats do not get tangled in people’s hair. Bats tend to be frightened of people and will fly away. Bats are not blind. All species of bats can see, but they see very poorly, especially at night. But, vampire bats DO exist; they are one of several kinds of bat species which have been described here. Bibliography:
