None Provided5 The 15th century was the beginning of the age of the Renaissance. In Western Europe it gave rise to new ideas, inventions, a new way of life, and most important a new way that people expressed themselves. It was an age of new techniques in painting, sculpting, and creating a visual aspect of the Western European culture. Among many great artists of this period, two very important people to the artistic world and their works spun out -- Petrus Christus with The Lamentation and Raphael with The Agony in the Garden. The Lamentation was painted in 1450 and its one of Christus’ most beautiful works. It displays the strength of his work along with the simplicity of the design and the clarity of depiction in the painting. The painting was done on plaster in oil beckoning by a wood panel. The overall painting is 10 1/8 x 14 inches, and painted surface covers 10 x 13 3/4 inches. The painting was later used as an inspirational peice of work to inspire a sculpted relief in Sicily. The Lamentation was done in one point linear perspective. Also developed during the Renaissance, its a mathematical system at which all lines meet at one vanishing point to make the painting look three dimensional. The texture of the painting is smooth. Since it was done in oil the colors are vibrant. Doing this painting in oil gave Christus the ability to change his mind at will. Unlike with fresco painting, where the artist is limited in time due to the fast drying of wet plaster. Without the oil the painting would have been lacking the it has. Christus focuses on a lot on the color red, which was the main color in most of paintings done with Christ. The painting shows the mourning after the crucifixion of Christ. Christ is found dead and bleeding in the painting with the nails that pinned him to the cross next to his legs. You can see a priest and a nun above him and two men trying to cover his body with white cloth, which could symbolize purity and after life. The woman to the left has something in her hand in a form of kettle, which may contain water. This symbolizes holy water, that by her movement in the picture, is going to be sprinkled onto Christ. Water in the background symbolizes purity. The priest and the nun are in the painting to show their eternal devotion to Christ and to show the belief in Christianity. The Agony in the Garden painted by Raphael was done in a method of using Tempera on wood. Tempera is a form of painting process where pigments are mixed with yolk and water or oil. Its a fairly quick drying process and demands immediate application of layers of paint. An artist using tempera has to work just as fast as the artist that uses fresco techniques. The painting is 9 1/2 x 11 3/8 inches, and was funded by various donors. The scene of this painting is a part of a predella for the altarpieces done by Raphael. It was removed in 1663 with the piece of a piece that showed Christ carrying a cross. The painting was done in black and white to show its simplicity. It shows Christ praying and kneeling down before a rock with an angel on it. The three other characters are in form of morning and despair. The are all supported by other things in the painting such as a tree and rocks. The trees in the distance are not fully bloomed and look like they are thinning so this may symbolize a time of the year like fall or early spring, and may also symbolize mourning or despair. This painting is also done in one point perspective. It looks three dimensional because the hills in the background are almost vanishing. However this painting is not very proportional. It looks as though Christ on his knees is the size that all three men would be if they stood up. This might have been done to show the importance of Christ and to emphasize his presence in the center praying. The angel is very sudel and it symbolizes various different things. It symbolizes life after death in heaven, and hope because Christ is looking above the men in despair and praying for something. And most important it symbolizes the Christian religion because Christ is kneeling before God and praying. Both paintings are very good representations of the 15th century art. Due to the shapes, colors, and hues used in the paintings, it gives us a sense of almost being inside the painting. Most of the objects are proportional and 3 dimensional. The paintings also contain lots of symbolic figures such as water, angels, and Christ himself. The Lamentation by Christus and The Agony in the Garden by Raphael both show Christ and the mourners that need him so. However the painting done by Christus has more life. May be because it is done in color or on a larger scale than the one painted by Raphael. I think that the Lamentation shows more and symbolizes more faith and the religious aspect of the two works of art. Even though they are very closely related, the Lamentation shows a better insight on the whole Renaissance movement and the 15th century as a whole. Bibliography:
