art1 Creative art therapy is a technique that implements theory of three major schools of thought: Therapists use this implementation of theory and introduce this technique to the client at the appropriate time to facilitate creativity, personal growth, and therapeutic change. ƒæ Creative art therapy can be used as a medium to capture hidden impulses, and emotions. ƒæ This technique also helps to explore unconscious secret desires and fears. ƒæ Jung¡¦s regard for imagination and creativity as one of the major forces of healing. Jung also introduced therapist to the role of active participant in the creative endeavor. „« Creative therapy helps client move towards self-discovery. The client sees self emerge through the development process. (Positive self regard) „« Art therapy can be used to help the client feel more relaxed in the therapeutic setting. (self disclosure) „« This technique can be used as an ¡§active listening¡¨ tool to help client express emotions or feelings that can not be verbally expressed. „« Art therapy encourages the client to view themselves as individuals. „Y Art therapy can be used to modify maladaptive behaviors. „Y True art therapist may have a great deal of difficulty with the above because this approach may be viewed as conforming as opposed to individualization and creativity. (For this purpose, I will not spend much time on this approach) Focus Population of creative art therapy: All; depending on the specific technique being used. „h No, the therapist does not have to be artist. Artistic ability is not the focus of art therapy. Art students who practice art therapy are sometimes considered possible liabilities because they may be more artistic than the client and the possibility of critiquing the clients work. „h Creative art therapy is not about what the finished product looks like, but what it represents in the form of expression.(the client¡¦s) „h Exhibition of client¡¦s artwork for others to see with out written consent is an invasion of the client¡¦s privacy! ƒá Some Examples of populations that an art therapist may work with: Creative art therapy creates a social setting of the elderly. It also helps the client to relieve past memories and some thing concrete to hold onto. Works may become gifts to give to those who are close. The gifts serve as symbols of connections between family and friends. Creative art therapy can be used to help the client with distorted body image and frustration of neurological disorder. Art therapy allows the client to experiment with imaginary and real life situations. Creative art therapy provides a mod for communication of thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Art therapist technique help the client to organize thought patterns. Art therapy helps the client to communicate what his or her world is. Verbalization Art therapy gives to the depressed client: the touch, feel, and sense of self worth that the client may feel is missing. Art offers the depressed client space to create his or her own self -discovery yet with in the protection of a warm caring atmosphere. Art therapy can be used as an information-gathering tool. For example a child may not feel comfortable talking to the therapist about feelings, but the same child may feel quite comfortable drawing a picture about those feelings and help interpret the drawing to the therapist. Labeling of feeling may sometimes be difficult for a client; art therapy is own way for the client to express feelings and thoughts. Art helps calm the client who may feel stress and anxiety. The list is much longer, but due to keeping your interest, it has been shortened. Art theory as applied to the coming of age of art Artist theory grew From Freud¡¦s theory of the unconscious and free association. Many artist¡¦s were inspired by Freud¡¦s theory and they used this to move create the Surrealism movement. The thoughts and visions of the mind inspired surrealists. Expressionism is a style that expresses inner thoughts and emotions. Expressionists tend to use extorted images of painting, sculpting, and literature to create an inner reflection of an inner world. Van Gogh would loosely be described as an expressionist. Symbolism is the use of words or gestures for their symbolic meanings of concrete words. What emotion do you think of when you see the color red? Anger? Hate? Passion? The symbolic meaning of the patient¡¦s art is the concrete meaning to the client. The last sentence in the above paragraph is what leaves creative art theory so controversial. The fact that creative art theory is so open to interpretation leaves many of its opponents cold. I could not possibly cover all that I learned while researching this subject, but I hope I have left you with a better understanding of what creative art therapy is.
