Napoleon Bonaparte
Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleon was never really a BIG guy, standing at a little less than five feet you wouldn’t think he could do much of anything; you’d be wrong. Napoleon had many victories in war over any number of countries. He was also a politician and quite good at that as well. It all started off in 1769, the birth of Napoleon Bonaparte I, son of Carlo and Letiza Bonaparte(History Channel.com). From his childhood he entered the military schools at Brienne and Paris(Biography.com). Receiving a commission in the French artillery at the age of 24(History Channel.com). Moving to the French Revolution he took part in the Corsican Rebellion, and was forced to leave the island(History Channel.com). That wasn’t the end of his little escapades in Europe, he moved onto bigger and more noticeable things. Napoleon was a master of strategy and warfare. He won practically every battle he was involved in. Returning to France after the Corsican Rebellion he gained notice by dislodging the British from Toulon(History Channel.com). He was briefly imprisoned in 1796, but his career was reopened when the Convention was assailed by a Prussian mob, and Napoleon was called on to disperse it(History Channel.com). Napoleon was also a strong political leader. November 9-10 1799 the French Directory was overthrown by the coup 18 Brumaire, and the Consulate was set up with Bonaparte as first consul, or dictator(History Channel.com). In later years Napoleon became first consul for life, had himself crowned emperor and king of Italy(Biography.com). He also made peace with the Roman Catholic Church by the Concordat Of 1801 and reformed the legal system with the Code Napoleon(Biography.com). Napoleon’s victories included defeating Russia and Prussia. Defeating Britain, several times. He also won small battle over numerous parts of the country gaining as he went pieces of the continent. Britain’s sea power grew strong with the victory at Trafalgar, so Napoleon instituted the Continental System (a blockade) to try and stop British trade with France and her allies. Napoleon’s marriage with Empress Josephine ended in 1809 because she could not produce him an heir, so he harried Marrie Louise of Austria and had Napoleon II(History Channel.com). Napoleon’s first weakness had appeared in the Peninsular War in 1808-1814, and his alliance with Russia was tenuous(History Channel). In 1812 Czar Alexander I rejected the Continental System, so Napoleon invaded Russia with the 500,000-strong Grande Armee. He Won the battle of Borodino then went to Moscow where lack of supplies forcing him to run away(History Channel.com). Then Prussia turned against France and joined Britain, Sweden, and Austria in the fight against Napoleon(Biography.com). The Allies then defeated the emperor at Leipzig in October of 1813 and pursued him into France, taking Paris, in March of 1814, on the way(history Channel.com). Napoleon abdicated on April 11, 1814 and was exiled to the island of Elba, which the allies gave him as a sovereign principality. The allies were deliberating at the Congress of Vienna when Napoleon returned to march on Paris(Biography.com). When King Louis XVIII saw this he fled and Napoleon ruled for the time period known as “The Hundred Days”(History Channel.com). Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo, by the combined efforts of Wellington and Blucher(Biography.com), during his Waterloo Campaign (June 12-18, 1815) and abdicated once more(History Channel.com). He was sent as a prisoner of war to the British island of St. Helena, he died there of stomach cancer on May 5, 1821. His remains were returned to Paris in 1840(History Channel.com). Napoleon,(1769-1821) a man of great stature for such a short being. He defeated the British numerous times. He defeated Prussia, and Russia. He was first consul for life and crowned king then emperor. Exiled but not defeated, coming back to rule for a hundred days. Then finally defeated and put away for good. This world would be a much different place no doubt, if Napoleon had continued his rampage through Europe. In my opinion he was a great man with great goals. So next time someone says you can’t do anything because of your physical appearance, remember Napoleon and stick your hand in your shirt. Bibliography:
