(p. 690) Even through all of the grandmothers efforts, The Misfit still found no mercy within himself, and shot the entire family.OConnor also used the point of view as a tool when writing the story. She often fluttered between limited omniscience and total omniscience. In the first two lines of the story OConnor tells whom the story belongs to. The grandmother didnt want to go to Florida. She wanted to visit some of her connection in east Tennessee and she was seizing every chance to change Baileys mind. (p. 679) She doesnt limit it only to the grandmothers point of view either. This allows her to give an overview of the story, while still knowing somewhat what is going on inside the grandmothers mind. The horrible thought she had had before the accident was that the house she had remembered so vividly, was not in Georgia but in Tennessee. (p. 685)This kind of insight into the grandmothers thoughts would not be possible with total omniscience. However, OConnor often slips into total omniscience at points throughout the story. The road was ten feet above and they could see only the tops of the trees on the other side of it. (p. 868) Also, at the end of the story after the grandmother has been killed, it is impossible for the grandmother to still be imputing her thoughts and feelings. As a result, total omniscience is gained and the limited omniscience is lost.Another significant part of the story is the use of foreshadowing. The Misfit is specifically mentioned three times, and death is often talked about. After reading about The Misfit, the grandmother advised Bailey not to take his family to a place with such a person on the loose, but really she is just using The Misfit as an excuse not to go to Florida.
