He has a brother, Peter, and a sister, Valentine, whom is the only person Ender truly loves. Ender is the third born in the Wiggin family, which is rare, because the limited amount of children per family is two. The government had been running a Battle School in space to train young boys and girls to become military commanders to fight against the buggers, aliens who had invaded Earth in the First and Second Invasions. Peter and Valentine had both been tried out for the Battle School, but Peter was too ruthless and Valentine was too soft towards the enemy. They both failed to go to the Battle school. But, the government wanted Ender. They wanted the death threatening genes that Peter had and the merciful and loving genes that Valentine had. They hoped that Ender would make the perfect military commander. So, The government had Ender born and they put a monitor on the back of his neck to watch his every move to see if he had what it took to get into Battle School. The monitor protected Ender from Peter and kids at school because if anything got out of hand the officers would stop it to help Ender. They took the monitor off. Peter and the kids at school could finally get to bully Ender without getting caught. Peter quickly took advantage of the monitor being off to bully Ender around. If it weren’t for his loving sister, Valentine, Peter would have killed Ender. The kids at school had formed at gang to jump Ender after school one day. The leader was a boy named Stilson. They were a little bigger than Ender was and they out-numbered him too. Ender knew they were gonna hurt him and keep hurting him for the rest of the school year, so Ender decided to make this the first and last fight. Ender won the fight by ruthless blows to Stilson when he was down. Afterwards Ender cried for what he had done because he didn’t like hurting people, he didn’t like being Peter. Colonel Graff came back to get Ender. It had turned out they wanted to see how Ender could handle himself without the monitor and he had done it perfectly. Colonel Graff took Ender to Battle School. Graff had isolated him from the other boys in his launch group by stating that Ender was the best of them, so Ender had no choice but to be the best in the group to make them like him. After a while, Ender made friends with a boy named Alai. Ender and Alai were the best among their launch group in the Battle room. Ender and Alai formed a group with their friends within the launch group and Alai quickly became the leader of the group and their launch group. A game that the kids could play on their desk, a sort of computer, was the Giant’s Drink. It was a 3D game with a character that could go wherever the player moved it and do whatever the player wanted it to do. It had games within each world where you could collect points and things. But, at the end of the level was a giant where he offered the player two drinks that were always different. One drink would kill you and the other would let you get into Fairyland. It was an unbeatable game. The player would always die and each death was different. One time, Ender didn’t drink either glass. He burrowed his hand into the giant’s eye and they giant rolled over and died. He had gotten into Fairyland by killing the giant. Ender didn’t like being a murderer and so he cried again. Colonel Graff had promoted Ender into the Salamander Army. It was one of the many armies within the Battle School. Only the older boys, boys above eight, were in armies and Ender wasn’t even seven yet. He was the smallest soldier in Salamander army. Ender made friends with Petra Arkanian, the only girl in Salamander army. She was the best sharpshooter in the army too. Petra was an outcast among the army though. Ender had made the wrong friend, but Petra was better than no friends were. She had agreed to teach him all she knew in the spare time after breakfast. The commander of Salamander Army was Bonzo Madrid. Bonzo ordered Ender to sit at the side and do his homework when the army practiced. Instead of practicing Ender studied ways to beat Bonzo’s army. Ender began to practice with the launchies in Free Play every day. Bonzo didn’t want Ender to practice with the launchies because ender was a soldier now and no soldier of Bonzo’s was to practice with launchies. Bonzo couldn’t keep Ender from practicing with the Launchies because Free Play was Free Play. Salamander Army had a battle against Condor Army, Ender’s first battle. He had stayed in the door as he was ordered and came through the gate after four minutes passed. Condor army beat Salamander’s. Ender was on top of the soldier efficiency list because he was 100% for firing 0 for 0. A few battles later, Salamander army had a battle against Leopard army who quickly froze all of the Salamanders except Ender. Leopard army had nine boys left going to the gate to win the battle, but Ender opened fire on them and froze five of them making the battle a draw. Bonzo was extremely angry that Ender disobeyed orders, so he hit Ender twice knocking him down into his bunk. Bonzo had traded Ender to Rat Army. Ender had not been dumped off he had been picked up by Rat Army. Rose the Nose was the commander of Rat Army. His army had no discipline at all. Dink Meeker was Ender’s toon leader who had requested Ender. Dink used Ender as a part of his toon. Ender’s first battle with Rat army he was ordered to attempt suicide by going straight to the enemy gate by Rose the Nose, but Ender did and he froze or disabled loads of the enemy. Ender went down in the standings the next few battles, and then he made fewer mistakes and made his way back to first. Dink made Ender realize that the other armies aren’t the enemy that the teachers are and that everyone in Battle School wasn’t normal. The next day fewer boys were at Ender’s practice session during Free Play. Word had gotten out that launchies who go to Ender’s practice session wouldn’t amount to anything. Fewer and fewer boys were coming to Ender’s practice now because commanders were taking down the names of the boys who did. Ender was hearing stories of launchies getting slapped around the bathrooms, accidents happening to them in the mess hall and game room, and older boys trashing their computer files. The next day the older boys came again, but this time they weren’t commanders. They were soldiers within Rat and Salamander Armies. They came to fight. Ender threw a frozen launchie in the face of one of the older boys and his helmet struck the older boy’s face. Ender gathered his group into a corner and then they all shout out in different directions for the door. Ender shout out to get the boy he threw at the older boy and pushed him to the door. Ender was stuck in the middle of the room. The older boys surround him. Ender got out of it all hurting every older boy who came to fight. Ender began to the Giant’s Drink again and went to the tower where the cloud took him. The rug unraveled into a snake and Ender killed it and looked in the mirror in the tower and saw Peter’s face with blood all over his mouth and the snakes tail hanging out of his mouth. Ender was again seen as what he hated the most, being like Peter. Ender threw the snake at the mirror and shattered it and from the corridor behind the mirror came loads of little snakes and they bit Ender’s character to death. Peter and Valentine had made up fake names on the nets and were writing about important political subjects. Peter was disguised as Locke and Valentine was Demonsthenes. The public took a liking to Demonsthenes and disliked Locke at first. This was Peter’s brilliant plan to take over the world. Demonsthenes was really Peter’s personality and Locke’s was Valentine’s. So Valentine got ideas from Peter and vise versa. Demonsthenes or Valentine got information about the world that normal people wouldn’t have gotten. She and Peter found out that the world as they knew wasn’t as stable as it seemed. The public had no idea about they’re true identities. Ender hated being a killer and in the mirror he saw Peter. Colonel Graff used Valentine to get Ender back on track with all his work at Battle School. Graff made her write a letter to Ender saying he wasn’t like Peter and he is not a killer so he would continue his work. Ender had been promoted to commander the next few weeks. He was commander of Dragon Army and his army was all very small. Most of them were small launchies. None of them were bigger or older than Ender. His army was impossible to work with. His army wasn’t stupid though. They all learned quickly. Ender began to isolate a boy nick-named Bean because of his size because Bean was the smartest out of his army. Ender trained his army very hard and they became very good considering their size. Instead of the usual four toons of ten soldiers, Ender made five toons with eight soldiers. He refused to do anything that other commanders did. They had battles within a month, which was two months early, and they won. Alai had said to him that the next time they would meet would be in a battle and Alai would beat him. They’re friendship was over. Ender realized it and wondered if Alai was as hurt as he was. Dragon army became very good. Instead of a battle every two weeks they had one everyday and they won them too. Then they had a battle twice a day, as if one wasn’t enough. But they again had won them all. Every soldier within Dragon army was in the top fifty on the efficiency list. He had a battle against Petra and she out of all the rest of the armies froze the most of his army. Ender beat her army and she thought it made her look like a fool in front of everyone and his friendship with Petra was no more. Ender started studying the videos from the First and Second Invasions for strategies from the buggers because the I.F.’s were all edited out. Ender had a battle against Salamander army in which he was notified ten minutes late and Salamander army was already in the room waiting for Dragon army to come out of their door to freeze them all. Once again Ender pulled off the impossible and beat Salamander army when they odds were stacked against him. Bonzo Madrid was very angry that Ender had beaten him, so he formed a gang of soldiers who hated Ender. Ender’s friends told him they were trying to kill him, but Ender figured the teachers got him in to this they would keep him safe. Dink Meeker told him never to be alone because that’s when it would happen. After a tiring battle that Dragon Army won, Ender went back to his quarters and slept till lunchtime. He got up and went to shower because he hadn’t showered yet. He was in the shower when Bonzo’s group of Ender haters came in. Ender didn’t do anything and neither did they. He reached for his towel, but it wasn’t there. One of the other boys had it. Ender signaled Bonzo out of the group, so Ender could fight Bonzo alone. Ender defeated Bonzo like he did Stilson. He finished him off so he would never come back and fight him again. Again without knowing so he killed another boy. Ender cried again because he didn’t like hurting people. A few hours later, Dragon Army had a battle against two armies at once. The other armies were destroying his army, when Ender decided to use a formation. He made a formation of a wall that was going straight to the enemy gate. Then it exploded. Bodies going in every direction. The other armies shot for the soldiers going in every direction rather than the five soldiers heading for the enemy gate. They did the victory ritual right under the other armies nose’s and Dragon Army won again. Ender decided he was through with all the battles, he was through with the games, and he wasn’t going to play their games anymore. But, he didn’t have to. He was graduated to Command school the same day. He took a shuttle to earth because they had none to go to Eros from the Battle School. He had a short landside leave. Valentine was having fun with Demonsthenes. Peter was mad at Valentine because Demonsthenes was invited to take part in the President’s Council on Education for the Future. Now Peter stopped telling her what to write about hoping this would make her column’s quality go down, but it didn’t. She didn’t need any help with Demonsthenes because she had been him too long. She knew how to write the column without Peter. Demonsthenes gradually took on a life of his own. At times she found herself thinking like Demonsthenes. Graff knew the true identity of Demonsthenes and used this against Valentine. Colonel Graff noticed that Ender didn’t want to go to command school, so he forced Valentine to talk Ender into going to Command School to save the world. She talked to Ender about Locke and Demonsthenes and then she decided to talk Ender into going to Command school. She used his weakest place against him and stabbed him there. She said if Ender tries and loses then it’s not his fault, but if he doesn’t try and they all die it is his entire fault. Ender decided he should go to Command School. Valentine was savagely angry with them for making them come to Ender like that. Ender took a shuttle to Eros, a planetoid where the Command school was located. During the three-month voyage to Eros, Graff explained everything he knew about the buggers to Ender. The most important thing though is that they had no communication, no language, that they communicate mind to mind. They communicate faster than the speed of light. But humans have created a machine called the ansible allows us to communicate as fast as the buggers could. Ender also learned that they, the humans were the Third Invasion. By the moment Ender landed on Eros he hated the place. Ender recognized they were isolating him again. So he withdrew into his studies and learned quickly and well. Like the Battle room at Battle School, Command School had a simulator, a perfect video game. Ender got really good at the simulator. After a year passed Ender won every game he played on the simulator. Then Ender got a teacher. Ender’s teacher was none other than the great Mazer Rackman himself. Mazer would be programming Ender’s battles now on the simulator not the computer. Mazer would program the strategy of the enemy. Mazer taught Ender everything he knew about the buggers. Mazer showed Ender how he had beaten the buggers in the videos. That all Mazer Rackman did was destroy the queen of the buggers and then all the other buggers just died because they couldn’t think. Mazer told Ender about the Dr. Device and how it was much more powerful than nuclear weapons. They had changed the simulator so that they’re were no controls for Ender to use to control a ship, but instead he could use a headset that he could talk to his squadron leaders and command them. His squadron leaders were Alai, Bean, Petra, Dink, Crazy Tom, Hot Soup, Fly Molo, Carn Carby, all the best students Ender had fought with or against, everyone that Ender had Trusted in Battle School. Every day Ender and his group practiced in the simulator. They won most of their battles despite their mistakes. They kept winning battle after battle and each day something new would present itself to make the battle harder. Each battle they had was supposedly “practice for them” but they were actually the real battles with the buggers. Neither Ender nor his group knew this and they thought it was Mazer Rackman’s strategy the whole time. After a while, Ender began to break down from the stress from the battles. He had pushed Petra too far and she had broken down. In Ender’s sleep he was having nightmares and he thought he was going crazy. Ender got seriously sick because he didn’t eat and the lack of sleep, so he collapsed after a battle and was asleep for three days. The day had come. It was Ender’s last battle to see if he would graduate. They’re were other people in the simulator room the day of his last battle to observe him. Mazer had told Ender that in the last battle the new thing was a planet. That was planet was the bugger’s home world and of course Ender didn’t know. Ender and his group were outnumbered by a long shot. Ender didn’t care anymore about the battles. He decided they were all games and he was tired of playing games. So he took a risk. Ender ordered his small force into a formation like a pencil. They were headed right for the planet. The enemy ships, the bugger ships, moved out of the way to gladly let them in so they could surround them. Then at Ender’s order the formation split up, going in every direction, shooting all the bugger ships and again it came back into the formation. It was getting in range of the Dr. Device. They were now in range. Ender ordered all the remaining ships to fire the Dr. Device on the planet. It worked brilliantly. The planet had exploded into to dust and all they enemies, the buggers, were dead. Ender had defeated the buggers without even knowing it. All the excitement in the room made him wonder why they were happy. Then Mazer told him what he had just done. Ender was devastated. He had killed the entire bugger species and didn’t even know it. He was very angry because once again he was a murderer and hated himself for it. With the bugger war won, a war broke out on earth and Eros. Americans claiming that the Warsaw Pact is about to attack and the Russians are saying the same thing about the Hegemon. They’re were Russians marines all over Eros, and the Polemarch is Russian. They’re was a truce on earth. They agreed to accept the Locke, Peter’s, proposal, which was that the I.F. would stay in existence, but without the Warsaw Pact in it. So the Warsaw Pact marines are going home. Russia agreed to it because they’re facing a revolt among the Islamic States. The Hegemon resigned. At first Ender believed they would bring him back to earth as soon as things quieted down, but things had been quiet for a year now and it was clear they wouldn’t bring him back to earth. He was much more useful as a name and story than he would ever be as an inconvenient flesh-and-blood person would. Ender was promoted to the rank of admiral. But now Eros was busier than ever, as colonists were brought here to prepare for their voyages to the empty bugger worlds. Valentine came to be one of the colonists to go to the bugger home world with the first colony. Demonsthenes had retired. Ender went with Valentine and the other colonists to the bugger home world and colonized it. Ender was governor of the colony that had settled the bugger world. The colonists set up a city and set up a self-sustaining economy. Life settled down, and years passed. The colony lived in wooden houses and used the bugger tunnels of the bugger city for storage and manufacture. They became people of the land. Ender found out through the ansible that the new colony ship was a year away and he had to pick a spot for them to settle. Ender took a helicopter to look for a far enough place for the new colony so that they could trade with each other, but be governed separately. Ender found a place that seemed good, camped for the night and got a feel for the land on foot. Ender felt that he had been there before. Ender knew why this place seemed familiar; it was the place within the Giant’s Drink. The hill where the Giant died and the ground covered over him. He then saw the play ground where he drowned the wolf-children and the woods. Then he got in the helicopter and then saw the cliff where the cloud had caught him and then he saw the cave, which was where the end of the world should be. There in the distance was the fantasy game and the castle tower. Ender got out of the helicopter and climbed the tower to find a rug in the shape of a snake and a dull sheet of metal with a face scratched on it to look like the picture of Peter. Ender remembered he could break the mirror and pulled the sheet of metal off the wall. Instead of millions of tiny snakes attacking him they’re was nothing but a hollowed out corridor. There was a white ball of silk, which was the egg of a queen bugger. He saw images of the queen bugger and the males fertilizing her eggs. Then images from his battles on the simulator but from the queen’s perspective. He opened and closed his eyes again seeing new images of himself putting the egg into a cool place, a dark place, but with water, so she wasn’t dry so that certain reactions could take place within the egg. Ender realized the queen bugger found him through the ansible followed it and dwelt in my mind. They came to know Ender by his nightmares. Ender picked up the egg and thought to himself that he was going to take the egg from world to world looking for the right place to hatch her so she can awake in safety. Ender picked a spot far from the castle tower for the new colony and wrote a novel from the queen’s perspective stating how sorry she was and that they killed us because they couldn’t communicate and Ender signed after the novel as “Speaker for the Dead”. He sent the book to earth through the nets and the book was published quietly. After a while almost everyone on earth had read it. Ender began to grow happy on the bugger planet and decided he had lived with pain and suffering all his life he can’t be happy now so he and Valentine boarded a starship and went from planet to planet searching for the right place to hatch the queen bugger.
