Ever World
Ever World Ever world, this book was about a group of friends, not close friends but they got along most of the time. A girl that was a sort of oddity in their school sucked them (in the previous book of the series) into a mysterious world. She led them too a lake and it just sort of sucked them in. If you don't get how it happened don't feel too bad because I didn't either. Anyway, they are in this "ever world" and they have no idea how to get out, they only passage is when they fall asleep in the ever world. When that happens they are transported back to the real world so they are always trying to catch a few winks in the ever world because they miss home so much. While they are in the ever world they are like zombies in the real world, alive and well but not their usual perky selves. The ever world is full of danger, mystery and excitement of some kind, you get my drift; it's never boring. Several gods that ruled the normal world a few thousand years ago created it. Egyptians, Aztecs, Vikings and monsters are all pushed violently into this one world. The gods did this for self-pleasure because K.A. Applegate (the author) tells us, they were "bored". It creates a very good setting, the time is of no consequence so it is never mentioned but it is on a world of it's own. There are lakes, rivers, jungles, forests and deserts all in the same square mile. Different creatures live in all of these different areas and they are often run into by our 5 young adventures. But when a new setting sets in it makes itself known, what I mean by that is that when they are in a jungle they are in a deep jungle. When they are on a lake it is an Atlantic Sea kind of lake and things like that. All the creatures that our heroes find in these environments are always very suited for that particular environment too; the jungle guys are very good with wood and are experts at chopping trees. They make super duper heavy duty blades that will cut through anything making it easy to find their way through the jungle. The Vikings are very good on the water, with expert seamanship they sail around the ever world and start battles and end battles with not as much as a thought. The Aztecs are very good with arrows, they are often found on mountains and have to be good at that for a good attack. All these people have gods and goddesses they give thanks to and praise when good comes to them. There is one really special hero in this story, one person that everything seems to revolve around. Everybody talks to him and usually only him. In that sense the story is very poorly written. Anyway, this guy's name is Christopher, not a very smart guy but a sensible guy and that makes him a good hero doesn't it. He tries his hardest to keep up in the real world, trying to concentrate on school and all the girls at school is very difficult for him. He is an average student, not an A+ but about a B+, one of those that is good but not great. Kinda like me huh Mrs. W? Anyway, he and his friends David and Jalil, and their special friend April all get into this huge ever world mess together. David is almost the same as Christopher except he has not a whole bunch of sense when it comes to trying to be a hero. He thinks he is a lot braver that he really is, he puts an image forward that is not real and on a couple occasions he is caught. Jalil, he is the smartest one there, I think he should be the hero because he is not only the smartest one there but he also has tons and tons of common sense. April, she is the only girl that has an impact in this story, she has no real connections with any of the guys in this story but she uses her charm to get pretty much whatever she wants out of them. She has good thinking moments but most of the time she is just there and not really doing anything at all important. The villain is pretty much everybody else, warriors are everywhere and a new little monster is waiting for your blood. The main villain though is Huitzilopoctli, he is a really big man and they describe him as a god. He works for the Aztec people, eating a few hearts there and killing a few armies there. He is the big guy that makes a big difference in this whole story, he doesn't kill the hero but he does kill his best friends Olaf Ironfot and Ivan Swordeater both are Vikings. I was impressed with how they introduced the characters, not like a "oh look that character was put in so well I feel like jumping up and down and throwing a party tomorrow" But it was a "very good Applegate I 'm impressed with that". The only thing that disappointed me was that the characters didn't change at all through the course of the story, usually at least one or two people change attitudes or idea before then end. This story had no changing at all, I think they are saving that for the 3rd book. Wars, being lost, almost dead, almost being sacrificed and almost eaten alive was something that all the characters had to deal with. They all came through though, all healthy and well which made me a bit mad. They usually only interact with themselves since the other people speak other languages or they are incapable of speech. The conversations they have between themselves are ones of fear and deep worry. They can't wait to fall asleep and get back to the real world and they are almost in tears when they wake up again. But from all the characters my favorite has to be April, not just because she was a girl but because she did not do stupid things that got her into trouble. All the other guys went here or went there with the knowledge that they might be killed but April never did anything like that she just stayed behind. I read this book because it was a fantasy, science fiction. Myth, fantasy, humor and adventure book all pushed into 185 pages. I expected it to be very good but nobody important died. I don't mean to ruin the story I just think that you should know that before you go wasting your time waiting for somebody to get cut shot or drown. I have to admit that lots of normal people die, they have to. But I am complaining that the main starting characters are the mains ending characters. This book has a good pace, something is always happening and they don't waste time with people just talking. It is always exciting because in ever world you never know when something is going to happen and in this book something is always happening. The plot can be summed up in a few words because it is a really short simple plot. Good vs. evil, evil wins then it's good vs. evil again and good shines through. The fights are short and they are not very detailed at all compared to some of the books I have read. The climax is an exciting one, it has a lot of preparation and when it finally comes it was well worth the chapters that led up to it. The conflicts are man vs. man for 65% of the time and for 25% of the time it is man vs. the supernatural. For the last 10% it is man vs. himself, Christopher is always having internal conflicts that trouble him to no end. Sleep and awake real world then ever world, I can see how it would get frustrating. The author, K.A. Applegate did pretty good writing this book, she wrote like teens talk. She referred to things that actually happen in the ordinary school day and she made a very good job of making this book an easy to understand read. At least I think it's a she it doesn't say. The description of the people in this story were done fairly well, people that were important got more detail than others and that was all good, but K.A. assumed that somebody would not be important but to me. They were so some characters that could have used a bit more development didn't get it because they didn't play a huge part in the story. The vocabulary was good, it was written how teens would talk so it was easy to understand. This book had few facts to back up what was going on but I can see how that would be hard because it was a fake world with fake things so not too many facts play a part in it. There was detail where it was needed like how the people got there and how that sleep thing worked but for the most part it did not give facts that I could take away from the book. And like I said earlier it was written like a teen would talk so I didn't learn too much at all. The theme was general, don't get mixed up in crap and you won't have to deal with it. Bibliography:
