The Chosen
The Chosen In The Chosen Reuven and Danny, as well as their fathers, led two very different lifestyles. Reuven’s lifestyle was proactive. In his Talmud study Reuven had to put in much more effort seemingly than Danny did. He had to look at the situation from many perspectives before he could come to a correct answer, and this is similar to how took on life. Reuven questioned things, much as his father did, even if it meant questioning authority or the text. Reuven had the ability to look at things with fresh eyes, much as he did upon his return from the hospital. Danny on the other hand had the ability to memorize Talmud text with very little effort, and reach a higher point of understanding with greater ease. But there is only a certain point of understanding that Danny could reach. Although he came to his conclusions quickly he never was fully applying himself in such a way that Reuven did. Danny’s vision was not as broad as Reuven’s, his vision deteriorated as his life went on, and he lost the ability to see a broader perspective. Bibliography: The Chosen, Chaim Potok
