The Homecomming
The Homecomming The book that I read was called The Homecoming. This book was mainly about a family that was deserted by their mentally arranged mother and had to fend for themselves in this cold harsh world. They also had to learn about things that they should have learned about when they were in their adult years, but they helped each other during this time, and worked together to beat the odds. But to get more detailed in the story The Tillerman kids' mother just left them one day in a car in a mall parking lot. Their father had also left them as well a long time ago. All they had left was $11, and this was supposed to last them. It was up to thirteen-year-old Dicey, the eldest of four, to take care of everything, make all the decisions, feed them, find places to sleep. But above all, Dicey would have to make sure to avoid the authorities whom would split them up and place them in foster homes. She had hoped they could find an adult they could trust, someone who would take them in and love them, but after all that she had been through, she really didn't think that this would ever happen. The characters in this book were very well put together. They all had their faults, but they worked together to get the impossible done. The main characters in the book were Dicey, whom was the oldest, and therefore had the most responsibilities of taking care of the family. Than it was the rest of the family which included James, Sammy, and May Beth. All these characters played an important part of the story. In the beginning you saw how Dicey first started off as a sibling, but later progressed in the book to be a motherly figure to her brothers and sisters, helping them each step of the way, trying to avoid the authorities, in fear of being separated from her siblings. Sammy was the second eldest, and he did not have as much responsibilities as Dicey had, but he also looked out for the children, and encouraged them when they were down. Sammy was the bright eye character in the story, he was the youngest boy, and he had his own sense of humor, even when the times were getting hard. Than it was May Beth, she was the youngest child in the story and her character was portrayed as a quiet, timid girl, that was very homely, and was not experienced with the world that was around her. The writing style of this book grabs your interest and holds you spellbound as it draws you into the midst of these abandoned youth. This book is like an adventure that leaves you eager to know what will take place. The reader laughs and cries with Dicey and her younger siblings. The way in which Cynthia Voight wrote the book makes you get in dept of what some teens or children actually have to face everyday. The writing style is realistic, and it seems that it actually happened. Bibliography: The Homecomming
