That is, conflicts about a general idea, about certain situations, or like in the Flannery Oconner’s story, about the characters in the story. The biggest conflict in “Everything That Rises Must Converge,” in my opinion, is Julian’s. On the one hand, throughout the entire story he constantly tries to irritate his mother (for example, by sitting next to a black man and attempting to have a conversation with him). Moreover, when he does not actually annoys her, he plans in his mind how to do so (bringing home a black woman for instance). On the other hand, he acts like a very good and disciplined boy. After all, he does take his mother on the bus every Wednesday even though he does not really want to do it. To sum it up, Julian has an attitude conflict towards his mother: he loves her and sacrifices from himself to her, yet, he also wants to hurt her (or at least think about it).
