Solzhenitsyn was born in nineteen hundred and eighteen and raised in Rostov-na-Danu, in southern Russia. He studied physics and mathematics at the University of Rostov-na-Danu, taking no strong interest in literature. The setting of One Day In the Life of Ivan Denisovich is sedate. Set in the early nineteen forties, the story begins at the Siberian labor camps in present day Germany. The main character, Ivan Denisovich, is a man of what we call middle class, but tries to maintain the highest standard living he can. Ivan Denisovich, the protagonist, is defined as well developed. He is a man who would love to be free from the labor camps for just a day. Captain Buinovsky, who turns out to be the one who imprisons him, is the other main character in this story. He would be considered as the antagonist. Denisovich had been in the labor camps for eight years now, so therefore he was pretty familiar with everyone in the camps including the leaders. While being in there he had become pretty close friends with one of the leaders named Tiurin. They had become close over the years and never parted from each other if they didn’t have to. Tiurin, then, would be the most important supporting character. He was in charge of his group, called the 104th Squad. A minor supporting character is Pvalo. He was also part of Ivan’s group, the 104th Squad. Pvalo was also one of Ivan’s good friends. They did not really talk that much, but he was always there to help Ivan when he needed it. The Tartar, a guard at the labor camps, is the one who makes Ivan scrub floors, and disciplines him harshly day after day. Tartar is understood to be an undeveloped character or “flat.” Bibliography: Word Count: 337
