In 1968, Cox Enterprises, Inc., a private company, was created through the organization of Cox. Jr.s newspaper interests. That same year Cox Broadcasting enters into the auto auction business in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia.Following the death of James M. Cox, Jr. in 1982, Cox Broadcasting became known as Cox Communications. This change was to reflect both the broadcasting and cable television industry that it had created. In 1985, the current chairman, Garner Anthony, merged Cox Communication into the private company Cox Enterprises, Inc. This single merger was the formation of one of the largest communications companies in the nation.1988 was the introduction of James C. Kennedy as the chairman and CEO of Cox Enterprises. In 1991, the auto auction business, Manheim Auctions, doubled its size through a merger with General Electric Capital Auto Resale Services. A few years later, Cox formed a cable and telecommunications alliance with Sprint, TC, and Comcast. However, the merger with Times Mirrors cable system in 1995 created Cox Communications, Inc., increased Coxs cable customers by more than 3 million. This merger allowed Cox Communications, Inc. to be publicly traded in the New York Stock Exchange. In 1995, Cox Radio, Inc. also becomes a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange while Cox Interactive Media is created to attract a news and advertising audience on the Internet.Cox Enterprises continues to own and operate on many levels of the media market.
