FOSTER CREEK POST OFFICE CASE
FOSTER CREEK POST OFFICE CASE THE FOSTER CREEK POST OFFICE CASE This case is about an experienced city postal carrier who has recently filled a position at a small town post office and has difficulty adjusting to a different way of life. The central characters include: Larry (the postmaster of Foster Creek), Jim (a senior carrier) and George (a senior carrier). The Foster Creek Post Office exists in a small town and the typical way of life is carried through at the post office. Harry has arrived at Foster from a fast-paced big city post office. Upon his arrival Harry is introduced to his new co-workers where he gives a shy hello and immediately begins his regular duties. Harry expresses no interest in becoming socially involved with Foster Creek and becomes further alienated from his co-workers. His remarkable efficiency and desire to complete his required work as well as any remaining incomplete work causes resentment towards his presence by the senior carriers. Larry is currently faced with the task of placing Harry with enough work to keep him occupied while maintaining harmony among the rest of the employees. His first suggestion is to lengthen Harry’s route, however the senior carriers disagree with Larry’s proposition. Harry has a very introverted personality. He appears to be somewhat high strung and needs to be kept busy. He was introduced very briefly to the rest of the office and immediately began his duties as a carrier. This brief introduction was not adequate enough for his personality. His co-workers know nothing about him and he has not put forth ant effort to become acquainted with them. Harry was neither provided with a sufficient background of Foster Creek. He has been conditioned by his previous “big city” job and is now experiencing a culture shock from his new environment. He is unfamiliar with the small town pace of Foster Creek, which is evident by his early completions of his routes and casing mail for other carriers. Harry needs to become accustomed to Foster Creek’s small town life and needs to be accepted by his co-workers by either participating in office activities such as the fund or by his co-workers learning more about Harry. Analysis of Senior Carriers (Jim and George) Jim and George appear to have a significant impact on the operations of the Foster Creek Post Office due to their number of years served and their involvement socially with the rest of the office. They are fully content with their jobs and the daily routine of the post office and will most likely be the most rebellious of any change. The greatest source of immediate conflict exists between Harry and the senior carriers. Jim and George most likely view Harry as a disruption to their daily easygoing routine that they have practiced for years. Harry’s speed and efficiency most likely threatens Jim and George into believing they will have to eventually meet the same standards. Being set in their ways, Jim and George may also believe that the Foster Creek Post Office is going out of its way to adjust to Harry instead of Harry adjusting to Foster Creek. These are the major reasons for which Jim and George have rejected Larry’s suggestion of lengthening Larry’s delivery route. Along with Jim and George, Larry is also content with the laid back atmosphere of the post office. He shows complete satisfaction with everyone’s work effort. He appreciates Larry’s performance and wants to effectively coordinate him into the office routine while maintaining social harmony. Larry does not exercise his authoritative position, which may be due to his goal of maintaining a laid back, easygoing work atmosphere. Although Harry has become alienated from the rest of the employees and has been resented by Jim and George ever since he has started, he has proven himself to be a very efficient worker who can benefit the post office. Harry’s working style demands that he keeps busy which may require more duties than the other carriers. He cannot however be viewed as a threat to the current way of life at the post office. An assistant to the senior carriers should be created and given to Larry. As an assistant senior carrier, Larry would be asked to assist any of the carriers in addition to his required duties only when necessary. He would remain under Jim and George in the corporate latter. This will provide Larry with another chance in gaining acceptance from the other employees. Bibliography:
