Automated AntiTrojan 8211 A necessity for Windows 9598 users
Automated AntiTrojan 8211 A necessity for Windows 9598 users Software Security has been a top priority for all the Operating System programming companies. Although Windows 95/98 is the most widely used operating system all over the world it is certainly not the best when it comes to security. There are many flaws that have been discovered and exploited by ‘hackers’. These hackers take advantage of the loopholes in the system to break through the security and give them access to a lot of confidential data in users’ computers across the Internet. Microsoft the producer of Windows 95/98 has not taken enough security measures when they programmed the operating system. One of the most dangerous programs that are used to exploit the security holes in the Windows 95/98 systems are ‘Trojan Horses’ or ‘Trojans’. Well, they have nothing to do with horses, but technically, a trojan is a program which does something you don’t expect it to do or a program which run’s hidden and allows others to control your PC across the Internet/Network. Some people misunderstand a trojan to be a virus and they think that since they have a virus scanner protecting their computer, it will detect the trojan and remove it. But, most of the virus scanners are ineffective against many of the trojans because of their versatility. Most trojans come in two parts, the client and the server that the client connects to. The server, when run, will often bury itself into a startup section of the user’s computer so that it is loaded every time he starts the computer. The servers are small programs which when run, open a port on the user’s computer which makes the PC ‘hack-able’ and it waits for the hackers to connect to the computer. These programs servers are often invisible and they don’t even show in the Ctrl + Alt +Delete menu. The bit that the hackers are interested in, is the client (see Fig 1 – next page). This is the software that is run by the hacker on his computer to connect to someone who’s already running the server. The client software is used to issue commands to the server (the victim’s computer). Hacker – Client – Internet – Server – Victim If you take away any of the above components then the trojan won’t work. The HACKER needs a CLIENT to use to connect to the server. He needs a SERVER to already be running on the VICTIM’s computer and the hacker needs some way of connecting the two computers (i.e. the INTERNET or Local Networks). (Pic. 1) A screenshot of the Trojan Horse Client used by the Hacker to issue commands Once the hacker connects to the victim’s computer he can do practically anything. He can create, rename, delete, copy or move any files or folders, download or upload files to the victim’s computer, or even format the entire hard disk. He can even open and close the user’s CD-Drive or move the mouse. He can steal the cached passwords, see what the victim is typing and even type on his computer or record voices or video if the victim has a microphone and video camera attached to the computer. The hacker can even use the victim’s computer to hack into other computers. The hacker is said to have more control over the user’s computer than the user himself. Thus, this poses a great security problem for many of the Windows user’s all around the world. There are a whole lot of anti-trojans available on the internet but most of the time the victim is unaware that his computer is getting hacked and therefore he never bothers to use an anti-trojan. The user can also prevent this by using a ‘firewall’. A firewall is a collection of software components that filters all internet traffic and is immune to penetration, allowing only authorized communications. Not many people know how to use a firewall and therefore it is not very widespread. Thus, there is a serious requirement for a an automated trojan removal system. This Automated Anti-Trojan program would continuously run on any Windows 95/98 system. It would detect any trojan programs that have entered the computer and they would immediately alert the user about it. Once the program has detected a trojan program running on the computer he could then render it useless and even delete it using Automated Anti-Trojan program. It could also be used to determine the source of the Trojan and notify the user whether it had come into the computer with another program or had someone sent it to him by email or anything like that. Sometimes, there are very newly introduced trojan programs and the Automated Anti-Trojan system may not be able to detect it. In this case, it would serve as a ‘port-watcher’ (internet connections watcher) which would alert the user if anyone would try to connect to his computer and ask the user before allowing to get access to the computer. Thus, even if a hacker could manage to get an undetected trojan program to run on the system it would not help him because he wouldn’t be able to connect to the victim’s computer. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement for making an Automated Anti-Trojan removal program. Considering the capabilities of trojans and the consequences that they could lead to, it has become an immediate necessity. It would be a great tool for all Windows 95/98 users and it would greatly reduce the security problems encountered by many of the users.
