I have used it sinse version 6.1. Mandrake Version 7..2, is by far there best version yet. It is a perfect distro from the linux beginner to the advanced Penguin. With hardware autodetection and easy software installation, it is the best transition from Windows to linux. Mandrake still allows you to use RPM pakcages as in Red Hat. Mandrake is quite similar to Red Hat. It comes equipped with KDE 2.0, Helix Gnome 1.2, Enlightenment .16.4 and many more Window Managers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Below is a list of some of the many advanced features that can be found in Mandrake's Newest Release: DrakX is the open-source graphical installer. DrakX provides several levels of automated installation for the various skill levels of users. Normal, Customized, and Expert; like previous versions. DrakX also allows you to configure Internet and network connections during the installation process with full support of ADSL and RNIS technologies. I found this feature very good, as soon as I was done installing I was able to go right into Netscape and check out my eBay auctions ;) There was no hassle of extra DiskDrake is the hard-drive partitioning tool which is incorporated into DrakX. DiskDrake allows any user to easily create, modify and resize disk partitions using an entirely graphical interface. A completely automated option is also available for inexperienced users. This is one of the options to use when in the install. This choice is the best to pick in my opinion, you have the best chance of not messing up you partions if you use this option. *grin* The very latest Linux Kernel (2.2.17) has been enhanced with the "Supermount" utility to eliminate the clumsy mounting/unmounting process for removable media such as CD-ROMs and floppy disks. Linux-Mandrake also includes a customized system kernel "kernel secure" for servers that need added security. It has integrated USB Support for such devices as USB mice, keyboards, scanners, printers, etc. Aurora is Mandrake 7.2's graphical boot load viewer. Within Aurora you may reboot, halt, single-user mode, multiuser (without network), user defined, X window system, DrakConf is a desktop control panel which offers quick access to system configuration tools for administering video cards, keyboard, mouse (including USB keyboards and mice), Network Configuration, Software Updatem, and many others. DrakConf also contains an updated HardDrake" utility which is a set of tools that offers auto-detecting and configuring of additional hardware devices such as sound cards, network cards, etc. Mandrake Update is an amazing program to constantly keep up to date on your application pakcages. Simply check off an app you wish to update, click update and watch it install unto your system. HardDrake is made for linux, but works fine on RedHat as well as many other distrobutions. It has a detect library for automatic hardware detection and configuration in linux. Rpmdrake Easily Organize, Install, Upgrade, and Uninstall RPM Packages. Menudrake can organize and group all applications that are installed. The menu configuration is saved for in all Window Managers. Userdrake can easily organize, add, delete and configure the many users on your Linux Mandrake system. Surf the web and exchange email with Netscape Communicator 4.75 (with Plugin Flash4), Konqueror and KMail * Watch videos with RealPlayer * Online chat with Everybuddy (AOL, ICQ , Yahoo and MSN compatible) * Online chat with Xchat (mIRC compatible) * DrakNet - a new Internet connection assistant supports dial-up modems, * DSL, ISDN and Cable * Internet connection sharing assistant with DrakGateway Gnapster is a clone of napster for windows. It has most all features of its windows companion. XMMS is a mp3 and mpeg player. It is compatible with Winamp. Winamp skins work in it and it look almost exactly like it.
