Plan Before Publishing Desktop Publishing for Communication Activity 3 – Plan before Publishing. 1. It is important to have background knowledge about the message, the audience and any constraints before publishing a document In preparing a document, information about the message, audience and any constraints must be known before publishing can take place. Information on the importance and the need of the message, the content of the message, the format, and the image you want the message to project must all be known. Different types of information about the audience must also be known. Need know whom the publication is intended, who they are, where they are from, and the level of interest of the intended audience. Information about the different types of constraints must be known before publishing takes place, time constraints, budget constraints and features. Knowledge of these areas will enable effective communication resulting in a successful publication. 2. When defining the message of your publication the issues of, need, content, format, and image must be considered. What is the message? The purpose or need of the message must be known. Defining the message, either as an instruction, a promotion or information. When it is known what the message is, it will determine the format or the way in which the document is organised. The content of the message, giving consideration to hierarchy importance, and the image of the message involving all aspects of the document, the quality of paper and established style. 3. What is meant by readers’ vs audience? Audience referred to as the target group (i.e., the group of people who may be attracted to your subject matter or your point-of-view) and your audience as readers (actual people who read your text, paragraph by paragraph, sentence by sentence, word by word.) An audience is the group of people who will be attracted to your writing. They may share certain subject interests, social or political beliefs, or certain demographic features. 4. Issues such as who, where and interest level need to be considered when defining the audience for publications. · Specific group or general audience (eg. Car enthusiasts magazine) · Characteristics of the audience (are they tended to be distracted easily) · Age (the age of the audience is publication intended for young adults, children?) · Ethnicity (the ethnic background of the audience need be considered) · Income sensitive (the publication need be appropriate to the social group it is aimed at. Eg. Advertisements of opera performances directed towards higher society) Where – Location relative to audience - · Large scale – impact of demographics · Region – different designs, same message · Smaller scale – distance page to eye Interest Level – The interest level of the audience need also be considered. Audience interest is what gains attention. It is important to have background knowledge of the audience in order to catch attention. Interest level will be either willing (wanting to read the publication), unpleasant, urgent, important. 5. Cost/Quality compromise. With many constraints on the Desktop Publishing the main being time and money there must be a compromise between quality and the costs. With high expectations, low budgets and near impossible deadlines a balance must be found between Time/Money and design preparation and document features hence the Cost/Quality compromise. With DTP documents containing features such as colours, art and photography the more features the higher the cost, time and effort. Time is a major constraint forcing compromise with features to create a simpler document. Money is also a major constraint with the cost of materials causing need to compromise budget and realistic specifications. Bibliography:
