The Last Day
The Last Day Confusion raced through her mind. The other life was just an action away. She didn’t want to be here anymore and she was ready to leave. She was tired of always getting hurt; nothing could be worse than the life she was living. Sure, there were people who loved her, but she didn’t love herself enough to stay here. All of the pain would stop with just one or two strokes of the blade against her wrists. Tristyn picks up the phone and dials a number she has dialed everyday for the past two years. “Hey girl!” Wendy says as she answers the phone. “Hey.” replies Tristyn. “I’m gonna have to call you back; I’m on the other line.” “No, it’s alright. Just one question…how do you slit your wrists? Is it sideways or up and down?” “I did it sideways, but you are supposed to do it up and down on the main artery.” She hangs up the phone and sits for a minute. Everything would be so much easier if I just weren’t here anymore. I wouldn’t have to see her everyday and know that I can’t have her. Will everyone understand that I had to do this? I hate to hurt people but I just can’t take this pain anymore. I just hope that everyone understands, but at least I won’t be here to hear everyone talking about how stupid I was to take my life. They just don’t understand. Emili walks into the room and looks at the girl she used to love. “You can’t do this Tristyn! I’ll call the cops right now!” says Emili. “The cops aren’t going to do *censored* to me! Just go pack your stuff and leave me alone!! You don’t care anyway!” Tristyn shouts. All Tristyn can do is lay on the couch and cry. She prays that her mom can understand why she had to do this. She doubts that she will. Tristyn lies on the tan nubuck leather couch her mom bought her and reflects on her life and all that has happened to lead her to this low point. Tristyn had always been given all the things she ever wanted or needed. Her mom had always made sure that she never did without. Tristyn hoped that her mom did not blame herself for any of this. There was no one to blame but herself, she knew that, for getting pulled in once again, only to be hurt for the final time. Tristyn had been in love before with a few boys. She always ended up getting hurt in the end. She met Emili and was promised the world. Tristyn was terrified because Emili was a girl and Tristyn had always considered herself to be straight. Being with a girl was out of the question in her mind. Time passed and she fell in love with Emili. It was a love like no other. Tristyn only thought that she had loved before. Tristyn and Emili hung each other’s moons. People talked about Tristyn and her choice, but she didn’t care anymore. She was finally happy and what other people thought did not matter to her. Her mom was beside herself. She was terrified of the pain and ridicule her daughter would have to endure because of her choice. Eventually, everyone accepted the choice that Tristyn had made and they were happy for her. A void was filled in Tristyn’s life that she didn’t even know was there. Tristyn and Emili would lay in bed at night and talk about everything. People had always envied them and the relationship they had. They seemed like a match made in heaven. Time went on and Emili tore Tristyn’s world apart. She was unfaithful to Tristyn and she found out. Emili thought it would be best to run away from the situation and act like it didn’t bother her. It was the toughest thing Tristyn had ever had to endure. They still shared a home and a bed and a life. Tristyn eventually realized that there was no resolving the situation and tried to go on. It was hard seeing Emili everyday, but Tristyn was just grateful that she still had Emili in her life. Tristyn was finally doing okay until Emili decided that she made a mistake and she wanted Tristyn back. Tristyn’s emotions ran hot and cold because she knew she loved Emili and wanted to be with her, but she also knew that she could never forget what Emili did and she didn’t know if she would ever be able to trust her again. She decided the best thing she could do was push Emili away. She hated to do it because she knew that she was tearing Emili apart, but she thought it would be best in the end. She wanted to be with Emili, but she kept pushing her away, hoping she would start believing that she didn’t want to be with her. Emili began to believe that she didn’t have a chance, while Tristyn was realizing that she couldn’t really go on in her life without Emili. Tristyn had always told her friends that she was tired of getting hurt by guys and she was just going to become a lesbian. Surely everything would be easier that way. Boy was she wrong! It was just as hard to be a lesbian, but in the end it was worth it because the bond she shared with Emili was so much stronger than any she had ever shared with any of her boyfriends. Tristyn thought of all this while lying on the couch. This past brought her to today which could possibly be the worst day of her life. She told Emili she had made a mistake and she did want to be with her and nothing else mattered as long as they had each other. Emili told Tristyn that she loved her more than anything, but there would always be a lack of trust and things would never work. It was ironic how they could never want to be together and make things work at the same time. They both knew they loved each other and wanted to be with each other, but they were having a problem with having the feelings simultaneously. Tristyn walks into the bedroom where Emili is packing up all of her stuff. She has to try and change Emili’s mind just one more time. There has to be something she can do. “Emili, please just stop. We can work this out. We both know that we are supposed to be together. You told me that yourself just the other day. Please don’t leave.” Tristyn cries. “You are the one who told me to leave. You said that you didn’t want me here anymore. I am just doing what you told me to do.” Emili replies. “I want you to do a lot of things but this is the only one you will actually take me up on! That’s amazing! I don’t want you to leave Emili. You are my life. I’m just trying to push you away because I don’t know what else to do. I know I don’t want you to leave though. We’ve been through too much just to throw it all away.” Emili doesn’t know what do to. She knows that she loves Tristyn and she knows that they are supposed to be together. She also knows that she betrayed Tristyn’s trust in her and she doesn’t think she can ever get it back. “What am I supposed to do?” Emili thinks. It’s going to kill me every morning to wake up and not see Tristyn next to me. I love holding her at night. I’m going to miss all the little things like goofing off and laughing at each other for no reason. I love the lazy days we have together where I just hold her all day long and know that whatever happens we have each other. I do want to be with Tristyn but she will never trust me and things will never work. She will always bring up the past and I will always have to live with knowing what I did to her. She is just talking crazy when she says she is going to kill herself. Emili hears a noise in the kitchen. She runs in there and Tristyn is looking in the drawer that holds the knives. She is hysterical and can’t stop crying. Emili grabs a knife and puts it to her own throat. “If you want to cut someone, cut me! I’m the one who did this to you.” Emili screams. “I don’t want to cut you. I don’t want to hurt you. I’m the one who doesn’t want to be here anymore. Just let me do this!” Tristyn cries. “I’m not going to let you do this to yourself. It isn’t worth it.” There is a knock at the door and Emili runs to answer it. She just called Tristyn’s best friend Larry and told him to come over. Hopefully it is him and he can talk some sense into Tristyn. Tristyn is standing in the kitchen with the knife in her left hand choking on her sobs. Larry and another friend, Mandy, come into the kitchen. Larry yells at Tristyn and tells her that she can’t do this. “You are my best friend in the world. Think of all the people you will be hurting if you do this. You’re not thinking straight. Everything will be okay.” Larry tells her. “People will understand that this is the only choice I had. They will eventually understand. I’m not doing this to hurt anyone. I am doing this to make the hurt go away. I can’t do it anymore Larry. I just can’t.” Tristyn sobs. “You have to do it. You have to live your life. You have so much going for you. You have family and friends that would do anything for you. Think about your mom. She loves you so much. If you do this, you will kill her. You are her little girl. You’ll get over this Tris. I know it’s hard right now but it’s not the end of the world. Emili does love you more than anything, but she knows that she broke your trust in her. You know that I will always be here for you no matter what. Emili will be here too. She told me that.” “It’s just not the same Larry. Nothing will ever be the same and I can’t go on in my life without her. How can she just walk away from everything? Doesn’t she know that I will learn to trust her again? It won’t be easy but our relationship deserves another chance. We were supposed to spend the rest of our lives together. I defied so many people because of my love for Emili. I risked losing all of my friends and my family for her. She means that much to me and I can’t just watch it die like that. I won’t do it! I’m already halfway dead. Just let me finish the job. I just want everyone to get out of my house and leave me alone!!” “You know we’re not gonna do that. We love you too much Tristyn. You are one of the strongest people I know. You can get through this.” “That’s the thing! Everyone thinks that I am this strong person, but I’m not! I act like I have it all together. That’s what I want people to see. It’s not me though! I have a heart that won’t let me be strong right now. Just because I act as though nothing bothers me doesn’t mean that I am strong. It just means that I am good at masking my feelings. Why in the hell do you think I’ve been pushing Emili away? Is it because I don’t care? No, because it was the easiest thing to do! Maybe I want to take the easy way out right now but it’s my life and my choice. I love you Larry. You are my best friend. I’m not trying to hurt you or anyone else. This is just what I need to do right now. Make sure you tell everyone that I didn’t have a choice and I didn’t do this to hurt anyone. I did it to make all of the pain go away. Tell my mom I love her and she is my best friend. Tell her I’m sorry and that none of this was her fault. Make sure she knows how much I love her and that I never questioned her love for me.” Tristyn turns and walks toward Emili. She knows this is the last time she will ever see those beautiful blue eyes. She soaks in every detail of how Emili looks at this moment. “I love you Emili. You are my world and I can’t go on without you. Thank you for loving me and letting me love you. I will miss you. Please don’t remember me this way. Remember me as the girl you fell in love with. Remember all of the good times we had together and never forget them. Never forget that I love you infininity.” Tristyn says in choked sobs as she walks toward the bathroom. Infininity is a word that Emili and Tristyn made up and they said it was even longer than infinity. “Where are you going?” Emili asks. Tristyn ignores Emili and keeps walking and it seems like an eternity before she makes it to the bathroom. She turns on the light, walks in and locks the door. She pulls out the knife she has in her jeans and sits down on the blue rug. Emili’s face is imprinted on Tristyn’s mind as she puts the knife to her wrist. Please God, don’t think I’m a bad person because I did this. It’s the only choice I had. Please let me into your world so I can look over my mom and Emili from heaven and make sure they are okay. If you decide not to let me in, please watch them and protect them. Don’t let anything happen to the people that I love. She puts the point of the knife into her right wrist and applies pressure. She begins to bleed, but she can’t even feel the pain. She takes a deep breath and slashes into her wrist, severing her veins along with all the ties in her life. She lies there and watches the blood soak into everything around her. “It could have been different, but you didn’t want it that way, Emili. You are my world and without you I am incomplete. Please remember me. Infininity.” she whispers as she draws her final breath. Bibliography:
