Journalism Today
Journalism Today Summary Leads ( Why are they are effective) The summary lead is the most widely used lead. It provides a brief summary of the facts in the article in the first sentence. Summary leads work best in inverted pyramid stories. I think that summary leads are effective because if the reader has an interest in the subject after reading the short summary at the beginning, then they will read the whole article. Sometimes a person will read only far enough to lose interest, but in a summary lead it will lead a person to want to find out more details and information about the article. 1) This lead is effective in this article because the Vietnam Wall is a very important milestone in the United States. This brings up curiosity to know why there would be a traveling one in Yadkinville. So the lead, through a feeling of sympathy and curiosity, urge the reader to read further. 2) Although the second summary lead is a sports story, it still has the same effect. Once you read who won and the score you want to know more details about the game so you read farther.
