Theevolution of the human species appears to operate along similar lines.Compartmentalization of societies makes sense. If one legal or ethical systemleads to the destruction of a nation, the entire world does not suffer. Theinherent efficiency in natural design lends itself to a multipurpose design insystems. Not only does compartmentalization keep a world that is operated byonly one standard ethic from being destroyed by some opportunistic manipulationof the system, it also allows for the natural diversity of local customs andgenetic differences to be accommodated in "culturally friendly" ethical systems.People have choices in how they will decorate their lives by adopting a varietyof value, ethical, and social systems.The evolutionary process operates on a grand scale. It is somewhat analogous toa laboratory experiment, operating on an enormous scale, in which new ideas andmethods are constantly applied. Sometimes the experiments lead tocounterproductive results. However, the mishaps do not spread, because theireffects are limited by compartmentalization.
