Foundations Of Education
Foundations Of Education This Assignment was designed to deal with my teaching abilities and how I approach lessons, it is also designed to hopefully improve they way I teach a lesson. The lesson I prepared and taught opened up my eyes and helped me understand exactly where I need to improve. Even though this paper isn’t the particular assignment you gave me and I did not do this over the semester while being in this class, it does deal with the very essence of learning that you wanted us to experience. It is a lesson that I did try to design around your teachings that I learned in you class “Christian Education for Adolescents.” The lesson I prepared was for a youth group that was not very big in size but had a lot of heart for their beliefs. They were excited to hear an American share a testimony and to talk to them about God; you could see they were hungry to hear it. To start off my critiquing I first want to share with you that my teaching skills I have might not be the brightest of teaching skills, but I have noticed that I do know how to prepare a lesson now. Before last semester till now I didn’t even know where to start. Since my first class with you as my teacher I have learned an amazing thing about the form of teaching, this is the Hook, Book, Look, Took process. When I first heard that I was going to teach a youth group in Venezuela I didn’t know what I was going to do. At first I did not know what I was going to do, then, I remembered that I needed to do what you taught me to do, I was supposed to form a lesson off of the Hook, Book, Look, Took. This style of teaching saved me because I didn’t know what to do and it is formed in such way that it gives you a process to start from and a place to end, he only thing you got to do to get started is to find a subject. I got lucky because the Venezuelans I was teaching new English better than other Venezuelans. The thing about them I noticed is that people there liked to watch movies as much as people here do. And the movies there are also subtitled, so before I came up with a topic I new I needed a hook so I decided I would use a movie to hook them in. I do not want to go into much detail about what I taught as you can see I have that stapled to the back of the pages. To end off my critiquing on planning a lesson I feel that I did a great job on figuring out what I was going to do. Your classes took me from point A to point B, and that is one step in the process to teaching that is needed. Where I lack in my teaching abilities the most is speaking. I feel this is probably hard for a lot of people, and is something that takes time to learn. I noticed my speaking ability was lacking about a year before I taught these kids. For some reason I feel that this time I learned a lot about teaching and after teaching this youth group something helped me understand that I needed to work on a lot of stuff, and this was the first time I had ever felt this besides the previous year. When teaching foreigners you always need to have an interpreter, even if they know a little bit of your language. Well, on this day I feel that my eye’s where opened to what I needed to see. What I needed to see was the way I was talking. I noticed that I was particularly slow in the way I did this. The thing that brought this to my attention was during interpretation, I had to think of what I was going to say next. It’s like I would start off talking and I would stop and pause to wait for the teacher to interpret what I said. You might be thinking well that is quite normal, but the way I was approaching was not. It was that I had no rhythm. I noticed that I was not completing my sentences and thoughts before I would pause. This took a lot away from my effectiveness to teach these kids, and I have noticed it can also take away emotion as well. This brought to my attention, if I want to be a good teacher than I need to involve rhythm in my lessons, not just when I am talking, but also during reading or other things as well. Rhythm is what makes a lesson flow; it is what I now call one of the secrets to teaching. Rhythm gives beat, and where there is rhythm there are people there to listen and be involved. Since then, when I figured out that I was missing rhythm I wanted to see the bigger picture of what I am trying to explain to you. I thought to myself teaching is just like a song, from both of them you can learn new things. One thing to always remember is that the songs that get played more on the radio are the songs that people like more. So why do people like these songs more? Why do they have the words memorized? Well my theory is the rhythm, the way the song is made to be heard. People like to dance people and people like to sing along, so people need something that sounds good to help them do so. This is my comparison to teaching. In order to get people to listen to what you are saying, and also to enjoy what you are saying you need rhythm. I feel with rhythm comes repetition, with repetition comes learning. I feel that if someone wants to be a great speaker he will use this to his advantage. This form of speaking will help people understand and enjoy what he is saying. You might say well what does this have to do with critiquing yourself? Well it has a lot to do with it. It is by far them most importing thing that I have learned since I taught this lesson. It is something that I have not yet learned to do that I need to do. It is something that I need if I want to be as good as I am saying I will be. If I want to be a great speaker than I need to learn how to do this while learning to prepare lessons. Without it I think teaching could be very boring for people. Being bored is something that I do not want people to be when listening to me. The final thing I want to talk about is Emotion, besides having people feel the emotion of understanding a lesson, they need to feel the emotion of how their life is with God. I feel that I still may need some more work on this but it is something that I did try to do and something that worked out great. Part of my look and took was to have them share with the others some personal experiences in their lives that had to deal with the lesson they just learned. Well before doing this I shared with some of my life experiences, the youth there was very interested to hear what my life was like in another country. Well, after this I let it loose for them and we all sat and listened to others talk and share stories about their walk with God. Afterward I was very disappointed about the whole way I taught this lesson and felt I could have done a better job in all the areas that I have just talked about. I did not share with anybody my thoughts about how I think I did. The thing that boosted my confidence is that when the youth had left for the night I was told that the kids had not been so opened up to talking about there walks with God, It was the most they had seen them talk about it before. Can God handle are problems or are they to big for him? The empire strikes back- this hook is about five minutes long. It is part of the Star Wars moves “the second one.” Luke Skywalker receives his first training as a Jedi Knight. While Darth Vader keeps on pursuing Skywalker’s rebel alliance, planning to use them to as bait so it will seduce Skywalker to the dark side of the force. Start time: 1:17:01; End time: 1:22:12 This part is when Skywalker first meets up with Yoda and his ship wrecked and landed in a pond. When Yoda takes him back to the ship he has him lift it up out of the water. As Skywalker Does so he starts to do it but then fails. Yoda says it is because of he doesn’t believe he can. So Yoda does it. Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” Question- what does this mean and why did Paul say this? 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power love and discipline” Question-what does this mean and why did Paul write it? Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not into your own understanding, but acknowledge him and he will direct your path. I had no look I replaced it because of my testimony. Can you relate to skywalker’s lack of faith? Is their something you lack faith in your ability to do? Testimony- I gave testimony bout my life as a teenager, and how I was afraid and because of that it caused me to stray away for 5 years or so. Youth group- kids of the group shared their story’s about how God had helped them. Bibliography:
