None Provided13 Student Arrangement- The class will be set up in centers for the duration of the lesson. Center one will be set up on the left side of the room. Center two will be set up on the right side of the room. Center three will be set up in the middle of the room so both teachers will be close to the center and able to see what is going on. The students will be introduced to measuring cups by correctly stating the relationship between the different cup sizes when asked. The students will also learn how to follow recipe directions by correctly creating a ladybug cookie and copying the recipe. The students will be able to sing the ladybug song. The students will learn how the ladybug defends itself by singing the lyrics and creating a group poster. The students will create their own 3D ladybug with construction paper. Green/Red/White Construction Paper Copies of I’m a Little Ladybug Song The Ladybug and other Insects by Celia Godkin Instructions for Creating Ladybug Red/Black Construction Paper I will tell the class as a whole that today we are going to be doing something different. We will be working in centers and in each center you will have the opportunity to be creative and artistic. I will then divide the class into three groups according to student’s behaviors and abilities. (Each center will also have an anticipatory set. It will be labeled number one in the teaching/learning set.) *Tia and Fred will be in one group and Sam and Sue will be in another group to insure more teacher attention. *Harry will be wearing a FM monitor connected to the teacher who is instructing him. *Tia and Sue will be in close proximity to teacher to allow for assistance. 1. I will start the center by asking the students if they have ever helped their mom make cookies at home. I will then tell the children that they will be making cookies but we first need to look at the math skills that go into making cookies. How do we know how much of each ingredient needs to go into the recipe? *I will direct the basic and easier questions to Fred and Sam so that they will be contributing. 2. I will show the students the size of a cup and also the different measurements that fit within a cup. I will ask the children to make predictions, for example how many times will a 1/4th a cup fit into one cup and so on. I will then show the children the reality of different measurements by using water. The students will take part in exploration. *I will expect Sam and Fred to understand that there are different size measuring cups. If able they will learn different sizes but not conversions. *All students who are able will get opportunity to pour water with assistance if needed. *All cups will be labeled for Tia and Harry. 3. I will explain the importance of accuracy in cooking and the need for measurements. I will then pass out napkins and we will together go over the recipe for ladybug cookies and each student will create their own cookie. *Tia will have a recipe in English and also one translated in Spanish. *Tia and Fred will follow my lead when creating cookie. *Sam will follow my lead when making cookie. *I will assist Sue when motor skills can not perform task. Sue will also be working with a buddy in-group. 4. The students will then create their own recipe card from construction paper. They will cut out green strips for grass and glue them on a white sheet of paper. They will then create ladybugs with a bingo stamp. With a black marker they will use their prior knowledge to put six legs on the ladybugs, one head, one pair of antenna, and spots on the ladybugs back. *Sue will have strips already cut out for her and glued on to white paper. 5. They will then copy my recipe of ladybug cookies onto *Fred will work with me during copying of recipe. *Sue will work with her buddy during copying of recipe. 1. The cooperating teacher will ask the children what some of their favorite songs were when they were little. They then will be reminded of the song “I’m a Little Teapot”. They will be informed that they are going to learn a different version of the song. The new version deals with ladybugs but it is still sung to the same tune. 2. I will pass out copies of the song and we will read the song together singing aloud as we go. *Tia will have a copy of the song in English and in Spanish *Harry may sign the song if he would like to during the song or sing it. *Fred will have extra time to catch on. 3. As a group we will look at the lyrics of the song and talk about some of the defenses that ladybugs must use to protect it from harmful predators. *Tia will have already made brainstorming worksheet. *Tia will be encouraged to try to write the words on the poster board. *Fred will learn lyrics to the song by the teacher or a buddy reading them to him. 4. I will then read The Ladybug and Other Insects to the 5. We will then brainstorm further using information from the book and create a poster labeled Dandy Defenses. The poster will have the song on it and also different defense tactics used by the ladybug. 1. This will be the last center that the children will go to. There will be step by step instructions for the children to follow describing how to make the 3D ladybug. 2. If some children finish early they will be instructed to write different facts that they have learned in their ladybug journal. *There will be picture instructions for Tia, Fred, and Sam, at each level of instruction. *Sue will have her pieces cut out already and she will be working with a buddy during activity. The class will come back together as a group. They will sing the song that they have learned altogether as a group and go over the posters that they have made. I will do a quick review of measurement by holding up different measuring cups and asking the class questions as a whole. At this time the students will have the opportunity to eat the cookies that they made. The teacher will then hang the 3D ladybugs from the ceiling. The student’s recipes that they created will also be hung in the classroom. Because the children are just being introduced to measurement sizes pertaining to cooking I will assess the students grasp on the concept through the activity and the students responses to my questions, during the individual groups and as a whole. I will evaluate the student’s grasp on following recipe directions by the cookies that they have created and also the recipe card. *Tia, Fred, and Sam will have different expectations concerning content gained. I will evaluate the children’s grasp on the song by listening to them sing it in the groups and also with the class as a whole. I will also evaluate the children’s grasp on ladybug defense by the poster’s they create and the review of the posters as a class. *Tia will be expected to try to participate. I will assess the construction ladybugs by looking at the finished product. I am not very concerned with assessment of this center because its main purpose was for the children to have fun and fill up free time. Bibliography:
