Brubach points out some of the words and phrases found in the catalog: Buttons. Collar. Placket. Seams. A hefty cotton jersey. She also shows that at times the catalog will use the names of famous people in order to make the clothes more appealing. The idea that is communicated to the consumer, while fingering through a J. Crew catalog is simple. Its a fantasyland, where no one is unhappy or alone. The editorial, photography and marketing departments want the consumer to feel a need to have their clothes. Toward the end of Mail-Order America Brubach states, J. Crew would have us believe that belonging to a community would fill the empty spaces in our souls. They want the public to feel as if they would be missing out on that inclusiveness J. Crew offers. Brubach remarks, On page after page, the good times unfold. Life is a party to which we wish wed been invited. J. Crew wants their customers to join that party, however in order to be invited, you must buy a sweater and matching skirt. In my opinion Brubach is correct when she suggests that Americas willingness to accept fantasy worlds, such as the one displayed in the pages of a J. Crew catalog, is the main reason for the mail-order catalog success. We get excited at the idea of true love and eternal happiness, which seeps out of each catalog....
