s the foes without help either. For example, when he is battling with despair, the Well of Life, which is baptism, and the Tree of Life, which represents Christs body and blood, help him. The reason for this is because holiness cannot win on its own and Redcrosse was without the truth at the time and so needed help to win the battles and not get sucked into the falsehoods. At the end of the story, Arthur who is representing Christ helps out Redcrosse. Arthur uses his all-powerful shield to defeat the dragon, or the Pope in the Catholic Church, and falsehood, or Duessa. Spenser created a very colorful story to depict the historical events taking place at the time. He succeeded in bringing history to live in a very entertaining way to show the intense battle that was taking place at that time and that many were confused about. Although, the battle is not yet over until Christ returns, we can assume for now whom Spenser believes will be victorious in the end and that will be the Protestants....
