him with the hope that Celie will nurse her back to health (Clarke 2). Celie takes care of Shug, who is mean as as a snake. She sicker than my mama was when she die. But she more evil than my mama and that keep her alive ( Walker 49). However, they develop a relationship that will eventually give Celie the courage to leave her husband and become free. This is the freedom that many black women in that time dreamed for. But a deeper issue grew out of Celies and Shugs relationship.Celie began to have feelings for Shug. Deeper feelings than friends are supposed to have. Celie did not know what to think about her feelings. Homosexuality was highly uncommon in that time and the subject was totally avoided in most cases. Shug teaches Celie about her body and Celies eyes are opened to a whole new world within herself. Celie was ashamed of her body, in part because of the sexual abuse she endured at such a young age. Celie saw herself as ugly and this thought came from her stepfather. He repeatedly told her that she was ugly and after a period of time she believed him. She ugly. He say (Walker 9). This drove Celie to look towards Shug for love. I look at women, tho, cause Im not scared of them (Walker 6). Celie and Shug participate in homosexual acts together. Celie does not see anything wrong with her actions because her need for love is being met. She Early in her life, Celie begins her relationship with God out of fear. Her stepfather tells her, You better not never tell nobody but God. Celie feels that God is the only person she can talk to about the horrible acts that are done to her. Later in a conversation with Shug Celie denies God. Her fear of men is showing itself once more. When I found out I thought God was white, and a man, I lost interest (Walker 202). She feels betrayed by God because He let all these bad things happen to her. Celie feels justified in her homosexuality with Shug because God allowed the me...
