them as a direct result of their sins.Another difference between the situations of the two men is that the person who brings trouble on the men is different. In The Scarlet Letter, Hesters husband, Chillingworth, is the one who causes Dimmesdale to break down, while in The Crucible, it is Abigail herself. However, the reason for Chillingworth and Abigail to cause the demise of each man is the same: jealousy. Chillingworth is jealous because he knows that Hester never loved her and that he is not as youthful and good-looking as Dimmesdale. Abigail is jealous that after the relationship she had with Proctor, he still loved and returned to his wife, Elizabeth. Abigail wanted to feel Proctors love, but she knew she couldnt.Another similarity between the men is that both men suffer similar consequences from how they deal with their problems. In The Crucible, Elizabeth is accused of witchcraft. Proctor does everything he can to prove that this is false. Due to his extreme actions, he too is accused of witchcraft. This ultimately leads to his untimely death. Dimmesdale, who is tormented by his secret, tries valiantly to keep his secret, but eventually must confess. His torture ultimately leads to his death, as well. Their adulterous acts bring the eventual deaths to both men. The time leading up to their deaths is very painful for both men. Dimmesdale is suffering constantly from hiding his secret. It tears him apart from the inside. Proctor, after being convicted, is put into a small cell in prison and must wait there until his hanging. He has no connection to the outside and, he cannot see his wife or anyone else. It is a terribly lonely time for him, and all he has left are his thoughts.Both men have a hard time dealing, not only with their sins, but also with the separation of their respective public and private lives.
