We see John Proctor claim to be a man of God to Reverend Hale, yet his forgetting of the Commandment, Thou shall not commit adultery is not coincidence because he has sinned with Abigail before, making him not the man of God that he claims to be. We also see the greatest example of hypocrisy in the book is Abigail Williams, a girl who claims to be a woman of God, condemning the innocent, just to get what she wants, John Proctor. She lies in the courts about seeing numerous people with the devil, but the reader knows that she herself is the devil of the story, causing all evil and harm wherever she goes.Abigail says, I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. But what the reader knows is that Abigail, like many other characters in the novel, whether religious, wealthy, or guilty, they do not kiss the hand of Jesus, but instead the hand of death....
