ms of his father. He knows that Willy is a fraud and that his ideas are phony. In addition, he is even able to blame his father for his inability to hold a job. I never got anywhere because you blew me so full of hot air I could never stand taking orders from anybody! (Miller 131) He couldnt stand to go through the regular routine of climbing the corporate ladder because he believed that success would just come to him. Happy, on the other hand, still lives in his fathers fantasy world. This is ironic, because even though Biff is that much-favored son, Happy is much more like Willy. Happy has been infused with his fathers ideals and so continues to chase after the American dream. Like Willy, he finds fantasy easier to live in than reality. Lois Gordon states, Hap, less favored by nature and his fatherhas escaped the closeness with his father that destroys Biff in social terms. Thus worshipping his gather from afar, Hap has never fully come to realize that phony part of his father and his fathers dreams. He does have longings to be outdoors and to get away from his fathers feet of clay, but he has more fully than Biff accepted his fathers dream. He is no social rebel, and he will carry on with the life of a salesman, and one suspects, go on to the death of a salesman.(55) When Biff comes back from his meeting with Bill Oliver, Happy tries to convince him to lie to Willy because Dad is never so happy as when hes looking forward to something.(Miller,105) Biff wants to tell Willy the truth, but Happy and Willy combined create an entirely different story from the one that Biff is about to tell. Biff becomes so frustrated with the lies that he screams, Listen, will you let me out of it, will you just let me out of it! (Miller, 109) Biff is attempting to tell what really happened, but Willy and Happy wont be forced out of their fantasy world. Willy is constantly comparing his family with Charleys family.
