Dylan Thomas and his works

It seems, that it is this confident optimism Dylan Thomas is trying to impose on the reader, and, perhaps on himself as well in this poem, maybe in order to keep his sanity.Dylan Thomas was a very passionate man. He showed passion in his poetry and in his life. He was once quoted in saying " One: I am a Welshman; two: I am a drunkard; three: I am a lover of the human race, especially women" (Cox 25). He was aware of the extent to which his temperament and imagination were the products of his Welsh environment. The Welsh influence came out in his works by Thomas using traditions, the tradition of culture existing in the language, and the influence of other Welsh writers; with them Thomas discovered a community of ideas and outlook. When Thomas moved away from Wales he began to see its life and traditions in perspective, and realize how they conflicted with the life and traditions in England (Cox 29). The second part of the quote pertains to Thomas gaining a reputation of being a heavy drinker, and he wasn't ready to disappoint his American followers. "Dylan lived up to his roistering and shocking reputation, while turning in some of his greatest performances as a lecturer" (Ferris 166). "He was loudly applauded," Ferris wrote, "His rich voice overcame any problems of meaning. People frequently said that Thomas' way of reading made them understand poems for the first time; but it may be under the influence of his voice, the literal meaning of a poem became irrelevant" (233). The third part of the quote states that he was a lover of women. This is very true considering his wife and many mistresses.
