Explication of On Reading Poems to a Senior Class at South High

, for the speaker compares the classroom behavior to the behavior of fish in an aquarium to point out common traits. The poem’s tone changes three times through out the poem. In the first stanza the tone is neutral and monotone. The teacher does his or her day-to-day job, and thinks this class to be just like every other class, that he or she teaches. During the second stanza the first change in mood occurs. The poem adopts a rather positive tone, for the teacher realizes he or she has the student’s undivided attention, and later the teacher is even aloud in their circle. But by the fifth stanza, the tone becomes melancholic. The speaker feels that for these students, class is something they have to go through, and as soon as the bell rings everything is over. The speaker was very touched for a moment, for he could not only watch the fish in the aquarium, from the outside, through the glass, but also be part of the action inside the aquarium, and swim with the students. Every day the teacher goes to school and does his or her teachings, and usually teaches a subject more than once a day. This can be a very monotone job, but when he started reading poetry to the students, a certain fascination arose within the classroom. The students were interested. The teacher’s day-to-day job was given a highlight. The school bell is the negative factor in this poem, which causes disruption. It causes the students to go on with their lives, and leave behind a person, who tried to bond with them inside this “aquarium” – the teacher....
