How does Kafka comment on 20th century capitalism throughout the novel and what symbolism does he use to depict it

ithin the established order of labour and commerce – again, an indication of the faults in Capitalism.Kafka also negatively represents the capitalist society by portraying its unfairness and injustice, and it’s financial hierarchy. We can see the effects of this capitalist society on the family itself, who once owned their own small business, and now have fallen into the labouring class, losing their pride and independence, now depending on their employers. This injustice in the capitalist system has also weakened the family’s ‘centre’ and ‘power figure’. Mr Samsa, who had previously driven his son back into his room ‘like a savage’ before having to return to work himself, now wears his uniform, a sign of servility. Mr Samsa, who is now always in uniform, is said to look ‘as if he were ready for service at any moment… at the beck and call of his superior ’, further stressing the servility of this character.This injustice can also be seen in the mistrust in the capitalist system, for a worker like Gregor, who has not missed a day of work in five years. In the morning when Gregor fails to report to work, the chief clerk visits to his house, only 15 minutes after the opening of the office, with stern accusations on Gregor’s conduct in the firm, insinuating that he has been stealing company funds, accusing him of neglecting his duty to the business and labelling him as inefficient. The idea that the author is trying to convey here is the uncertainty and harshness of the capitalist world on your job – even a person who devotes his life to work as Gregor does is threatened with dismissal for trivial reasons. The employer, here representing his class, seem to lose his principals and sense of rightfulness in the sake of greater profits, the aim of the capitalism, which presented this way seems pitiless and unsympathetic.Lastly, I believe Kafka was trying to port...
