MacbethTragic Hero

Macbeth played an extremely important role in this play as she provided the scheme that caused Macbeth to assassinate King Duncan. She told Macbeth to “Only look up clear” and to “leave all the rest to me” (I.iv.70-72). Macbeth vacillates before the murder of Duncan (I.vii.1ff.). He experiences hallucinations that precede (II.i.33-35) and follow (II.ii.35-36) this murder; he is unable to answer "amen" to "God bless us" (II.ii.23 ff.). He feels remorse in II.ii.60 ff. At this point of the play the change in Macbeth's character is in fact exposed. Macbeth's first murder was a trying experience for him, however after the first murder, killing seemed to be the only solution to maintain his reign of the people of Scotland. Therefore it was Lady Macbeth who introduced the concept of murder to Macbeth.Throughout the play, Macbeth is driven by an obsession to become King of Scotland, and in the process commits acts of betrayal and treachery to achieve this goal. Therefore, Macbeth's ambition also influenced his declining character. However, Macbeth's ambition had not been strong enough to carry the motive to kill King Duncan. Lady Macbeth's influence also came in to play because if not for her, his ambition would not have been intensified enough to drive him to obtain and maintain his title of King of Scotland no matter what it took, even if it meant and endless line of murders. Macbeth's ambition influenced the cause of his new character. This new character of Macbeth was filled with greed, violence, and power hunger. Macbeth showed this new character when he killed King Duncan.In conclusion, the prophecies given to him by the witches, Lady Macbeth's influence and plan, and his intensified ambition, all contributed greatly to the depreciation of Macbeth’s character, which resulted in his downfall...death.
