er than them all, elegant, gracious, smiling, and crazy with joy (Maupassant 180). Everything that she could have wished for was represented by this infamous evening; the necklace made it happen. All the men looked at her, asked her name, endeavored to be introduced. She danced, and received compliments all night long and into the morning. This was all possible because of the beautiful necklace; without it she would have looked as plain as every other woman. She had finally ascended to her proper and rightful place within society. Shortly after leaving the party; the sweet success of the evening turns into a long ten years of sorrow. The necklace is gone, unable to be found, it must be replaced. To ashamed to admit her error, Mme. Loisel and her husband are obligated to purchase a replacement necklace. She is then forced to see how well off she was prior to her greedy and unneeded desire. At the end of the story, Mme. Loisel crosses paths with her long time friend Mme. Forestier this is when we learn that the necklace was made only of paste. It was a fake, just like Mme. Loisel. She felt in order to be accepted she had to put up a false front. She had to keep up with the Jones in sense. This is a major character flaw that ends up costing her ten years of her life. She had become the woman of impoverished households-strong and hard and rough (Maupassant 182). She had become a totally different woman on the outside; aged and worn out. She was no longer the beauty who was worthy of riches and the finery of the upper-class.The necklace is the chief symbolic object in this story. In the beginning, it represents what the main character desires from life; beauty and wealth which are only obtainable by an exclusive few. Then, it causes outstanding conflict for the characters when it becomes lost. But at the same time it is fake, just like the front put up by the main character.
