But through Sattareh, I found out that Iranians find it imperative to learn poetry because these great Persian poets talk about the culture and beauty of their country. For Sattareh, or “Satti,” memorizing a poem was a weekly ritual. Unlike most Iranian women, Satti was raised very well educated. I have extreme homage for Satti. She speaks ardently and eloquently about her father and his wives. She speaks candidly about her father and mother, and explains their significance to her well-being. Pages 35-49By 1911, Iran’s economy was in disarray from the civil war and years of street fighting and rioting were a commonality. The ubiquitous effects of Iran’s civil war were still not hindered at this time. It was a clash of modernism vs. traditionalism. If I were the Shah, I would regulate some laws that were deemed a sacrilege, and yet try to maintain an environment with some sort of clemency. This is where the stereotype for an Iranian comes from. The fact that people refer to us as terrorists. “Human beings are like parts of a body, created from the same essence. When one part is hurt and in pain, the others cannot remain in peace and be quiet. If the misery of others leaves you indifferent and with no feelings of sorrow, You cannot be called a human being.” Even though Satti memorized this earlier in the book, I feel that this poem by Sa’adi justifies these events that if you were to do something harmful to someone and show no remorse, an inhumanity has taken place. “The worst calamity that can befall a nation is disunity” (Kasravi). This is credible as shown in Iran’s 20th century. Iran has reached a low point during these times.Pages 58-69I feel that this particular section is one of the most profound and essential event that has made the woman Sattareh is now.
