Midterm notes

poem is based on the legends of King Arthur and his knights at the Round Table. This was a popular subject of medieval literature. These knights were evaluated by values of honor, loyalty, and modesty. Every knight was loyal to his king and would give anything for his reassurance and to protect the king and the country. Also, every knight was honorable and knew the appropriate way to act in the presence of a king and queen. All great knights were modest and knew their power but rarely bragged because this would denote their strength and mastery. 5. Many people might argue that Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a fertility myth. The constant reference to the color green might lead people to infer that the author intended this. The color green is the symbol of fertility and rejuvenation. There is not only The Green Knight, but also the green chapel, and the green garter, and many other references to the color green. Since most of the story was centered around Christmas, there was very little green that would have been in nature because most of it was probably covered by snow. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight also makes many references to nature which may lead to the idea of the constant life cycle and also of birth. It is my opinion that although there may be connections to the book being a fertility myth, it seems to be a far stretch to show any real and convincing evidence that it is.6. Laughter keeps the reader on his toes not expecting what else could possibly happen as the poem progresses. The opening scene when Sir Gawain cuts off the Green Knights head and then he picks it up and rides off onto his horse is very comical. The comedy in the poem not only keeps the reader interested and waiting for more surprises but it also takes away the tone of seriousness that is present when Sir Gawains life is at stake. 7.
