imself and to let Curly "have it", Lennie responds: "Let'im have what, George?" If Lennie had Curley's mean temperament, Lennie would really be dangerous. When George explains some of Lennie's erratic acts, he emphasizes over and over again that Lennie has never done anything that one would consider mean. Lennie's greatest difficulty seems to be remembering. While he never plans to do anything wrong, he simply can't remember what is wrong and what is not. Steinbeck's mentions numerous times how often Lennie forgets that little animals must be treated gently. For example, in the scene in the barn, Lennie accidentally kills a puppy while playing with it because he simply could not remember to treat it gently. The question arises as to how Lennie can forget everything else but still remember to return to the place that George pointed out. The point is that Lennie does remember most of the things that George tells him. For example, he can remember what George says when he is angry. Thus, since George instructed him to return to a certain place, Lennie does remember this thing. He just can not remember he can and can not do.As mentioned above, Lennie does not have very much control over his own life and behavior. His brutal actions are never intentional. ...
