Shedding Some Light
Shedding Some Light "Sun and Moon" by Katherine Mansfield, is a short story about a dysfunctional, wealthy family. Dsyfunctional is identified as abnormal or impaired functioning. In this case, it shows that the parents attitude towards their children are abnormal. By analyzing how colors and food affect the story, I'll explain the importance of narrative point of view and the omnicient. Sun is a little boy who is ignored and mistreated by his parents and their friend:"All the people who couldn't get at Moon kissed Sun, and a skinny old lady with teeth that clicked said,'such a serious little poppet' and rapped him on the head with something hard"(pg2). Everyone treated his sister, Moon, better than they treated Sun. When Nurse was dressing the children for a party, she complimented Moon on her fur dress. Nurse only commented to Sun that he looked like a Russian lad. At one point, Sun narrates that he doesn't mind people not noticing him...much--but of course it bothered him. He was a little boy who needed attention. The story is told in the narrators point of view because he's the outsider, looking in. When Sun narrates, he is the voice of reason. His perception of what's going on is real. His character name was probably called Sun because he was hte on who was shedding some light in the situation. Moon, on the other hand, doesn't see the evil in people. She is always laughing, even if she doesn't get the joke, just so she can be part of the festivities. She represents someone who is living in the fantasy world that her parents weaved for her. Bibliography: "Sun and Moon" by Katherine Mansfield
