After writing a few pages, he decided it was not worth his time to keep writing on, so he tossed it in the trash. His wife Tabitha took the pages out of the garbage and began to read them. After reading the crumpled pages she encouraged her husband to continue on with the story. So he decided to take her advice and in January 1973, he submitted Carrie to Doubleday. In March Doubleday bought King’s novel. Then on May 12, Doubleday sold the paperback rights of Carrie to New American Library for $400,000. Stephen received half of the money because his contract stated so, and he quite his teaching job to pursue a writing career.King then pursued to have a family where he received three children, Phillip, Joseph, and Naomi. They decided to stay in live in Maine where they then moved to Bangor and still lives there today in his 25 room mansion. On June 19, 1999 at 51 years old, Stephen King was involved in an accident. He was struck by a blue 1985 Dodge Caravan driven by Bryan smith, 42, was headed to town from his camp to load his cooler. When his dog Bullet started to get into the cooler Smith turned around to stop him and his van went off the road and hit Stephen.
