They are attracted by the opportunity to imagine themselves in roles they find romantic and exciting. (Pinscher 643).Tom believes in sticking strictly to rules, most of which have more to do with style than morality or the well being of others. Tom and Huck are a perfect combination. His rigid rule following contrasts with Hucks willingness to think for himself. (Rinaldo 7). When the boys return from their pirating adventure to attend their own funerals, Tom and Joe are smothered with attention and affection by their families while Huck stands awkwardly alone, with no family to welcome him home. Tom points out to Aunt Polly the unfairness of it. He demanded that somebody be glad to see Huck. Tom is always loyal to Huck. He is so loyal that he repeatedly disobeys Aunt Pollys orders not to play with Huck, and even announces to the schoolmaster that he was late for school because he was playing with the forbidden Huck Finn. They use oaths and blood and anything secretive they can think of to represent their loyalty to one another (Rinaldo 1). Huck and Tom Sawyer are good friends because, although Tom is under strict orders from Aunt Polly not to play with Huck, he admires Huck so much that he disobeys Aunt Pollys orders and secretly finds ways to play with his outcast friend (Rinaldo 7).When Huckleberry Finn is introduced in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer he is a sort of comic figure in his clowns outfit of discarded clothes (Rinaldo 7).Huckleberry would become one of the greatest characters in American literature. The boys see each other, as they want to be seen, and together create a world of adventure (Rinaldo 1-2). The novel and its characters have achieved folk hero status in the American imagination.
