culture; it was medieval culture, therefore making religion the way of life.Men liked to be buried in the shadow, which protected them from evil; it was the shadow of the church. In this holy place they awaited the final judgment with fear and joy. People who were greatly affected by the power of the Church followed its strict rules and regulations to stay away from the grasp of evil.Men and women were often the tools of the devil not just victims, due to a pact they made with the evil one. They flew during the night to horrid assemblies, or the covens, where they coupled with demons, and in return they received the power to caste spells on their neighbors leaving them impotent or causing their cattle to die.Pope ruled this mighty empire of religion as God’s vicar on earth. Popes believed that they possessed dominion over souls, bodies, and over the earth, which they derive from. They dreamed of a City of God. In this city the pope, God’s vassal would command his vassals’ the kings to defend the faith. Papal claims were supported, and impaired by the possession of the Patrimony of St. Peter, also the city of Rome along with its surroundings, and the Papal States. These lands were badly administered and could not provide enough money to support the papal court. Therefore the popes sought more territory....
