The Prince

I was recently awestruck to find such a highly comprehensive book on the shelf of my local library. This book has been by the bedside of many other men, including Oliver Cromwell, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Fredrick the Great. Though it was written a hundreds of years ago Mussolini stated, “I believe Machiavelli’s The Prince to be the statesman’s supreme guide. His doctrine is alive today because in the course of four hundred years no deep changes have occurred in the minds of men.” Until I read The Prince I never truly stopped to think about the human mind or its reaction to its leaders. It wasn’t until a few chapters into the book that I developed an interest in human psychology, which is the course I wish to take at Georgetown University. I think Machiavelli’s The Prince became a timeless literature because of the deep understanding of the human psychology that he held. I do not agree with majority of what Machiavelli had to say but I do understand that his authoritative knowledge on ruling came from his extensive understanding of human psychology.Machiavelli wrote, “A ruler who depends entirely on his good fortune will be destroyed when his luck changes.” I have a desire to lead and endure adversities through self-reliance, rather then hoping for good kismet. I believe, that not until I fully understand the minds of men will I be able to lead them correctly. I am disciplining myself in order to achieve a higher caliber and refine my skills, which has lead me to apply to your school.By Hasan K. Memon...
