d no matter how many times you've read it or how you feel about the manners and morals of the characters, you won't be able to resist its spell. This is a classic that really does live up to its reputation. Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, a conservative upper middle-class suburb of Chicago. In 1917 he graduated from high school and worked as a reporter for the Kansas City Star. Hemingway sailed to Europe in May 1918, as a volunteer ambulance driver for the Italian Red Cross during The Great War. Within weeks, Hemingway suffered a serious injury from fragments of an exploding mortar shell on the Italian front. Hemingway recovered in a hospital in Milan where he had a romantic relationship with a nurse, Agnes von Kurowsky. This incident provided the inspiration for his novel A Farewell to Arms. In 1919 Hemingway returned home at the age of 19, his parents did not understand the psychological trauma he had suffered, and they pestered him to get a job or go to college. His short story "Soldier's Home" draws on his difficulties in coping with his parents and friends.Hemingway eventually began working for the Toronto Star Weekly. He married his first wife, Hadley Richardson in 1921. He became the European correspondent for the Toronto Daily Star and moved to Paris with his wife in December 1921. Hemingway became friends with Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, Miro, Picasso, and other people belonging to the group of prominent writers and artists living in post-war Paris. Hemingway began to make a name for himself as an author of fiction as well as a journalist. His novel, The Sun Also Rises was published in 1926. The Sun Also Rises contains vivid, provocative descriptions of bull-fighting, a life- time passion for Hemingway.
