Titanic Differnces

xists around this tragic event. Hardy weaves vanity, somberness, and sudden ending into a complete metaphor of the emptiness left by the legend of Titanic.Although both poets took on such different opinions, they both speak truths about this tragedy. Slavitt’s optimistic interpretation brings out the lighter side of death. He shows us there is happiness in death. Death does not have to be somber. I believe on a deeper level Slavitt in some way intended to show a peacefulness in death in general. To many people dread dying and the death of loved ones. This is very true; but death is often cold and saddening as Hardy shows us in his version. Most of the time the realities of death are quite depressing. Death is common experience for all mankind. However, once you die you cannot share what it is like to die with others. This idea seems very obvious but I believe that is why death is so mysterious and why there are so many different ideas about it. These two authors wrote poems about a common event yet reached such opposing conclusions. This is the very thing that inspired me to write about these two poems. Both are so alike and at the same time so different. I was inspired by these two poems. It opened up a new doorway for me. Never having cared much for poetry, I was surprised how captivated I was. This opportunity to experience poetry was very fullfilling. I plan to continue where the poetry unit left off and expand my horizon The tremendous differences in these two actually bring them together. Slavitt’s “Titanic” and Hardy’s “Convergence of the Twain” embody opposite ideas yet speak about the commonness of death. Life is a matter of perspective resulting in a miture of common and uncommon ideas. These two poems represent how diverse opinions can be. After all, doesn’t that make the world go round. word count: 999...
