This goes back to a representation of replaying of slavery. The masters feel power and strength when they have complete control of their slaves lives. Beloved acts as if she is the master. She is in complete control, and she is in complete control of Sethes life as well as Denvers life. These characters do not want equality in the relationship simply because they do not know how it is to have equality between the members of a relationship.
