s mother is ill and is unable to take care of the family. Celie is forced to cook and clean for her family. Celie conceived two children because of her father’s continuous raping. She never sees her children and believes that her father killed them. Her stepfather scares her by saying "You better not never tell nobody but God. It'd kill your mammy." (Walker 1) “By Pa’s standards, the incest and adultery that he has committed are not his violation of taboo; rather he projects his guilt upon Celie, making her fear that violation of his command will kill her mother.” (Deats 260) Although she is invisible to Pa as a human being experiencing pain and degradation, Celie reveals her emotional and psychological distress at sexual relations with the man she assumes to be her father. He then sold her to a man named Mr. ____ who had no intentions of loving her, “No matter what I’m thinking. No matter what I feel. It just him” (Walker 69). Mr. ____ verbally and physically abused her. Bruckner explains the abuse best on page 3 of his book, “In marriage, Celie, nonetheless, manifests her potential for creativity in figuratively becoming a tree:He…beat me like he beat the children. Cept he don’t never hardly beat them. He say, Celie git he belt…It all I can do not to cry. I make myself wood. I say to myself, Celie, you a tree. That’s how come I know trees fear man. (Walker 22)He expected her to manage all the housework and demanded that she took care of his kids, “They look at me there struggling with Mr.____ children” (Walker 45). If Celie refused, she was punished and severely beaten. He beat her because of the anger he had towards his father.
