ldn't contain himself any longer. As a result of gambling for cigarets, the Big Nurse confiscated all the cigarets and put them in her office. Her office has a huge glass window to observe the patients. The Big Nurse took great pride in keeping it spotless. In the middle of a meeting McMurphy walks over to the office and punches through the glass, grabbing a pack of cigarets. He then sits down and says "I'm sure sorry, ma'am... Gawd but I am. That window glass was so spick and span I com-pletely forgot it was there" (Kesey 190). McMurphy was now back to his old form, creating trouble and playing games with the Big Nurse. He broke the Big Nurse's window a few more times and was now permanently on top of the Big Nurse's list once again. Even with this problem McMurphy still obtained permission to organize a fishing trip for all the patients which included the institute doctor as a chaperone. During the trip the patients get fresh air, sun, drunk, a prostitute, and laughs. These things did not happen on the ward. It was a whole new experience for the patients. McMurphy and the guys had a blast, and of course, the Big Nurse was once again furious. McMurphy's role in the ward is the goose, the one who takes care of the baby bird (the patients). McMurphy is the one who shows the men how to have confidence. "The fishing expedition, brilliantly handled by Kesey, accentuates the growing sense of community among the patients" (Martin 315). McMurphy is the one who organized the whole trip and got permission to leave the institute. The trip would not have happened otherwise. On the trip so much was gained for the patients. This was their first huge gain of confidence. On the trip he showed the patients how to have fun and stick up for themselves. McMurphy gave confidence to Chief. In the end of the movie Chief said to McMurphy I"m strong now. This is straight forward proof that McMurphy gave confidence to the patient. Chief...
