William Shakespeare, tells of a tragedy involving lust, love, hate, revenge, and jealousy. Othello is one of William Shakespeare's best-known and loved tragedies. Iago loathes Othello, his hatred is unbearable. He feels he has been treated unfairly. He plots to frame the Moor’s wife with Cassio. Iago believes that the Moor took his rank from him. Especially relevant to the issue of Iago's character; for although he is called "honest" by almost everyone in the play, he is treacherous, deceitful, and manipulative. Also applies to Desdemona, as Othello believes that she is deceitful and impure, although she is really blameless and innocent.Iago will say many things to Othello to convince him that he is an honest and sincere man. “Beware my lord, of jealousy, it is the green eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on”(act 3, 3, 1351). Iago turns Othello against Cassio and Desdemona, while feeding them words that contradict his actions. “Goodnight honest Iago”(act 2, 3, 1343). The key to Iagos character is in the line "I am not what I am"; Roderigo should take this as a warning, but fails to. Everything that Iago presents himself as is a false show; even here, he pretends to be less evil than he truly is. “I do believe’t, that she loves him ‘tis apt and of great credit,” (Act 2, Scene 3, 1345). Iago plays and toys with Othello’s mind like the devil. Iago, later on in the play, is referred to as being the devil. “Demand me nothing…I never will speak a word,” (act 5, 2, 1399). Othello stabs Iago when he is brought back in. Othello then tells all present to remember him how he is, and kills himself. Cassio becomes temporary leader of the troops at Cyprus, and Lodovico and Gratiano are supposed to carry the news of the tragedy back to Venice. ...
