Alec again tries to deceive society by posing a minister to cover his past life and gain their acceptance. Of all the roles Alec could have chosen, he chose the one that brings forth trust in people's hearts. It is an occupation in which many former crooks and liars are converted into God-fearing men that upstanding men place their trust. His sermons are those of the strictest, most intense lessons. Alec is able to tell the congregation that he "had been the greatest of sinners" (324) and still the probably offended listeners innocently gave their belief. Nearing the end of the novel, this evil man performs his ultimate trap, in which he convinces Tess, a married woman, to pose as his wife, to again try to gain approval using her family's once high status. The former preacher yet again fallen from grace earnestly and continually tells Tess her husband will never return to her. So again our poor heroine is lost and submissively believes. The realization of Alec's ultimate deception hits when she looks at her true beloved come back to her and she must refuse him:"And then my dear, dear husband came home to me… and I did not know it! …And you had used your cruel persuasion upon me… your taunted me and said what a simpleton I was to expect him… And at last I believed you and gave way…" (427)So again a good woman is fallen, into the recesses she creeps to try again to reach supreme nobility.Although somewhat veiled by his good family and high place in society, Angel Clare gives more proof that Hardy and Fitzgerald parallel in their opinion of the human race.
